Firstly congrats on the new product launch, very appealing form factor. I’m considering an iPad but this could be a nice alternative to throw in a bag.
I had a search but didn’t find it on the spec page or in the forum.
Does anyone know if the main board is replaceable on this device?
As you say it is an new product launch. As I guess there will be better versions of it in the future like the FW13 and FW16. But, how fast doe you want to upgrade? Directly at launch? I’ll think to upgrade after at least three years if it is an good upgrade. But, it can also be 5 years that I wait for an upgrade. But not at day 1…
Yeah I agree with you, I wouldn’t want to upgrade for a long time; it’s rather I’d like to know whether it’s replaceable at all. The FW13 explicitly states so on the product page, and with a nontrivial purchase it’s nice to be reassured.
Framework has made a big point to say that this is their most repairable device yet. The mainboard is definitely replaceable. The only question is whether or not they will make new versions with new processors and such available down the road. As long as it isn’t a total flop, I’m sure they will.
Most of them say “coming soon,” but just like all of their other products, there is a page full of various disassembly and repair guides for the FW 12. Remember, the FW 12 only just opened for pre-orders, and it it won’t start shipping to customers for a couple months.
Framework has a lot of social media where they post a lot of information including tutorials on replacing motherboards. Look out on their YouTube Channel for upgrade instructions, although it’ll probably come out when the next generation of FW12 comes out and there’s actually a board to replace. If you just want teardowns, keep a lookout on iFixit.
