Upgrade to dual channel on FL13 7840U for gaming after a year?

I bought the FL13 7840U in 2024 and I configured to have 1X32GB DDR5 5600MHz RAM. At that time I didn’t know much about dual channel having better iGPU performance(Iris Xe graphics downgrades to Intel UHD on single channel). Now I’m considering upgrade to dual channel. However it’s more than a year since I bought the RAM.

Should I buy the other 32GB on Framework Marketplace? or just buy an ADATA AD5S560032G-S from any vendor? Or it’s already too late, better to sell the 1X32 and buy both RAM sticks at the same time to ensure the same model/batch?

Buy the stick from an independent vendor unless you want to give more money to fund Framework; even Nirav recommends this as the one on the market place is marked up a good bit. No need to sell off your preexisting stick - just make sure the clock speed is the same or else the board will downclock your faster stick to match the slower one.

I wouldn’t buy another as the chances of getting one with the same timing/revision is slim from this time range. If it was me, I’d just get a matched kit and dump the one you have.

While mixed ram works in most cases it is best avoided, just get the same model you already have from wherever it is cheapest/most convenient.

Thank you for your replies

Only clock speed? Any 5600 not strictly ADATA ones?

What will happen if the RAM size and frequency are both the same, but the timing/revision is different.

Just grab the ADATA AD5S560032G-S?

For the best chances of no issues yeah, though more likely than not pretty much anything will work. I mixed a crucial 16gb 4800mhz stick with a kingston 32gb 5600 one for an experiment and it just worked (at 4800 of course).

I’d match brands if possible, but like Jim said, if possible try to get two from the same batch. I hadn’t considered timing and revision.

Update: I changed the RAM to CT2K16G56C46S5 (2X16GB) and I got TWICE the framerate on Furmark. Thank y’all very much

But now you’ll have an extra 0.2W idle power, what have you done XD
