USB Troubles

So, I’ve always had some kind of minor issues with USB on my FW16, but it seems like it is getting worse now.

  • Headphone jack audio doesn’t always come up on boot
  • Headphone jack audio sometimes randomly stops sometimes, and I have to reboot for it to work again
  • System doesn’t charge if the charger is plugged into a forward port instead of the middle one
  • Display doesn’t always come up if the HDMI expansion is in a front port (and started working when I moved it to the back on the other side).

I also get messages like this:

Anyone know what’s going on? Is this a software issue, or is my hardware breaking over time? It does seem like it’s getting worse over time, it used to be occasional and I didn’t really care that much but it seems like now it is an issue in some way almost daily.

I’d like to know more about this as I’m in the market for a framework 16 laptop. But I may wait until a Thunderbolt 5 version is released.

Honestly, from my experience and from what I heard about the 16, I would just not get one. I already decided not to get a Framework Desktop because of my experience with this thing. It was a massive headache early on (replacement mainboard, buying a new network adapter since the Mediatek it ships with is just a piece of crap, lots and lots of time spent taking it apart and taking pictures and things and reproducing problems in Ubuntu before I could get help with its hardware issues.) It semi-worked for a long time, but now I am sort of considering if maybe I should just buy a whole new mainboard for it and test the theory that maybe the “AI” mainboards are just more reliable than the older FW16 batches. If I could just have this as a daily computer and not have it act up periodically, it would honestly be perfect.

The 13s are supposedly quite reliable, and honestly I love the thing as far as its features go, but this particular FW16’s reliability has been a constant thorn in the side of what should have been an incredible top-tier machine. I heard the 16 had some kind of flakiness problems and all I can tell you is, they were not oversold. Get a 13.

Also, I have now upgraded to BIOS 04.04. I haven’t had the audio issues yet today, so fingers crossed.

Also, I guess it is not supposed to be able to charge from the front ports (according to Port differences - #4 by Destroya ) – I honestly just had no idea about this, and it has been mostly doing display output even when I plugged HDMI into the front left port, but maybe it just isn’t reliable in that port… who knows. I moved the display expansion card and I’ll obey what’s in that listing of the different ports, and see if I have issues when running it that way.

(Not today since doing the BIOS update, I had all kinds of audio problems this morning)

Edit: Also, now I’m second-guessing myself about the HDMI working in the front ports… I feel like maybe that was the left middle that I used to use, before I started changing things around to check the audio? IDK man. It’s currently in the right back port, and I plugged in the HDMI cable four times and the display came up two times.

Oh… and there’s a stack trace in the kernel log. Exhilarating.

Not sure exactly how it lines up, but that is me moving the HDMI expansion card around, finally sticking it in the back right port, and then plugging the monitor in four times (and having it fail to come up the first and fourth times, and succeed the second and third times). Pretty sure 21:35:02 pretty much lines up with the fourth plug-in when it didn’t come up.

Now imagine having to write configs for different monitor layouts for Hyprland, in lua, on NixOS!

Yeah, I saw that after, see my edit. The headphone stuff is still concerning.

Since the firmware update, it’s actually been fine so far - it randomly disconnected one time today, but that was transient and came back when I plugged it back in, so that’s fine for me. I might try some of the other stuff that was giving me issues before (suspend / resume without crashing, and running videoconference off battery power) and see if it’s all fixed with the firmware update. If so, that would be hunky dory.

Okay, so I’ve seen it again today – generally, since upgrading the firmware and figuring out which ports I need to plug things into for them to work, it seems fine. However, a couple of times the USB audio expansion port seems like it’s just flaking out completely. Here’s a kernel log from a representative sample today (when it just randomly died in between finishing one song and me starting a new one):

I’ve seen it happen one time when I picked up the laptop (the headphones suddenly cut out and the kernel log indicated a disconnect from the USB device).

Sort of sounds like the audio expansion card is the issue, and just right now died. Yes?

I’ll reboot though and see if that brings it back to life. That would seem weird but stranger things have happened I guess.

(Edit: Actually, another possible theory is that it just had some kind of disconnect that crashed or effectively-crashed Pipewire I guess. None of the audio worked in any slot, though. I’ll investigate a little bit more before a reboot.)
