I have a PS5 controller so I use this. But as I’m playing most games on steam (using cachyos right now) I am thinking to get an xbox-controller. Why? Because most games on steam support Xbox natively, but PS5 just using this steam adaptation, which is annoying sometimes
I wouldn’t advise getting an MS Xbox controller, I’d get a 3rd party one with Hall Effect sticks. It’d be cheaper too, unless you want wireless…then it gets pricey to add in the Hall effect sticks ![]()
Besides all the technical details, that also depends on what gaming systems you own or are most likely to buy in the future. Nintendo-style gamepads and Xbox controllers have different ABXY button layouts and I’d go with whatever matches your muscle memory.
Or Mineclonia, a free and open source Minecraft-like game.
I see the battery on that can’t easily be replaced. Still a nice piece of tech though, worst case scenario one could just run it wired all the time when the battery wears out.
I’ve been playing SNES games, personally. Especially the Link to the Past randomizer. I may see if I can run an n64 emu on it later (for Ocarina and Majora) but haven’t tried that yet. Decent battery life whole running snes9x so far though.
I’ve been using a Gamesir Cyclone 2 controller that I bought a while ago. On my Windows PC, it connects as a X-input controller, but on Fedora Linux it defaults to PS4 D-input mode.
I gave Dark Souls Remastered a try on my FW12 i3 with 32 gb ram and I had to leave the Steam input disabled for the controller to be recognized by the game. Interestingly, if you play using the flatpak version of Steam, the game shows the default Xbox button icons, but on the RPM version of Steam it is recognized as a PS4 controller and shows Playstation icons.
To get Dark Souls to run well, you have to have a consistent 60fps since the game speed is tied to the framerate. Initially I tried running it in 900p with motion blur and depth of field disabled. The FPS seemed alright with only occasional drops to 55-50fps, but you can really feel and see the slowdowns, so I lowered the resolution to 1152x720 to get a solid 60fps.
I also tried playing Fallout New Vegas on the Epic Store through the Heroic Launcher. To get the controller to work, I had to jump through some extra hoops following the instructions in this video: youtube.com/watch?v=RZGJC6B6bO8. The game runs alright at 900p medium settings.
Team fortress 2 and quake work well! Using niri / xwayland-satellite
Also a little disappointed with the battery setup - I’ve used the wired version of the 2C for close to a year now, and it’s otherwise identical to the wireless model. It’s been great, as long as you don’t mind using a cable.

TF2 is also working well here on Windows 11 after an Intel Graphics driver update (been meaning to make a thread about the freezing with the FW driver bundle versus working fine with the update ver) and running at full-res even in MvM with MasterComfig medium-low: https://comfig.app/
Any good linux compatible recommendations for games or engines that would be good for folding the FW12 into tablet mode and putting it on a table at a bar or club for a few friends to play on together? like maybe turn based board games or card games?
Tabletop Simulator is best value for your money here since it can become so many other games: Tabletop Simulator on Steam
And check out this curator’s reviews: Steam Curator: Touch-friendly games
Board Game Arena (BGA) is a great web-based option that works on pretty much any device, including my FW12 with Linux. There are many games to choose from.
Which driver did you update to? After a quick search I found this one, is that the one you mean?
I’ll probably play some Stardew Valley.
Yes, that’s the one. I also selected the options to install the configuration utility and to replace the existing configuration utility.
I got Burnout Paradise Remastered running! It took some tweaking in %LocalAppData%\\Criterion Games\Burnout Paradise Remastered\config.ini to follow these recommendations: _A_ fix for Intel Integrated crash after "Connecting to servers" :: Burnout™ Paradise Remastered General Discussions
I’m not sure if one option in particular was the magic bullet, because I changed all of them at once to match the example.
I’m not sure if it will maintain 60FPS in the later events with higher speeds and lots of enemy cars, but I’ll drop it down from full WUXGA to 960×600 if I need to. This is running with Bo98’s BPR Core Bugfixes mod, but that mod didn’t have any effect on BPR freezing at startup. It also wasn’t related to the webcam which seems to be a problem for many people; mine worked just fine for taking the DMV photo.
edit: I took a longer video
For rhythm game fans, got DJMAX Respect V running on Linux Mint. Using 125% scaling on the display, setting the game to 1600x900, and an external keyboard because the built in keyboard could only accept 3 inputs at the same time. ![]()
(Prefer this game with mechanical keyboard anyways.)
My only issue is screen tearing. Anyone know how to resolve that in Linux Mint? I heard something about Wayland but not sure how to install?
edit: Okay, plugging in the laptop allows me to run the game easily at 1920x1080, and 100% scaling reduces the screen tearing to zero. Still learning Linux and gaming on it, but it seems easy enough! Finally have a portable version of DJMAX again~
Wayland is not an application that you would “install”. It looks like Linux Mint still defaults to X.Org. I have no idea if it’s possible to force Wayland on Cinnamon (the default DE for Mint) but you could install Plasma or GNOME which use Wayland by default. You would then be able to switch DE’s at the login menu.
Found a thread by googling if you want to try your hand at enabling experimental Wayland Support in Cinnamon.
I’ve tested tons of games on the 12. Here’s the ones I’ve been playing:
Vintage Story (runs well if you lower the graphics a bit.)
Balatro
Hallow Knight/Silksong
R.E.P.O
Rimworld
Slay The Princess
Slay The Spire
Terraria
Factorio
Plate Up
Ultra Kill
Date Everything
Project Zomboid
Shantae (All entries work well)
FTL
Duck Detective
Core Keeper
Cross Code
There’s lots of other games that would work well but these are some of my favorites. I think any metroidvania is great for the 12 because they can be played comfortably on the keyboard.
I’ve been enjoying Vintage Story, Hollow knight and Rimworld the most on the 12. :]
