Can anyone recommend the most cost effective RAM (8 GB) and storage (500GB) for the RYZEN 7 version? I plan to buy my own storage from BestBuy and am not sure which ones to select that are the most compatible with this laptop.
On the topic of RAMâŚ
Framework hasnât published anything about specific DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM RAM for the FW16 Ryzen AI 300 mainboards yet. When they do, it will be here:
If youâre asking about the FW16 Ryzen 7040 series mainboards, thereâs a good amount of info here:
On the topic of storage drivesâŚ
You shouldnât need to worry much about NVMe SSD brands like you may with RAM. You will need to make sure youâre buying M.2 2280 or M.2 2230 SSDs and you might want to make sure you get single-sided storage (literally âthe chips are on one side of the storage cardâ) to make sure you donât have any space issues, especially if you are going to have a 2280 and 2230 drive installed on the mainboard.
- Generally speaking, look for drives that say PCIe Gen 4 x4 NVMe when looking for a 2280.
- The majority of NVMe 2280 SSDs Best Buy carries are PCIe Gen 4 x4.
- (NOTE: x4 means âfour data lanesâ).
- Whether youâre buying the Ryzen 7040 or Ryzen AI 300 mainboard, youâll have a board compatible with PCIe Gen 4 - NOT Gen 5.
- The majority of NVMe 2280 SSDs Best Buy carries are PCIe Gen 4 x4.
- If youâre looking for the physically-smaller NVMe 2230 drive AND youâre getting the FW16 with Ryzen AI 300 mainboard, the 2230 slot is pared down to two lanes.
- I donât think M.2 NVMe 2230 Gen 4 x2 drives exist.
- Storage drives with four data lanes will work with a mainboard that has two lanes - theyâll just take a bit of a performance hit.
