You have a Ryzen 7 7840HS motherboard with 32GB RAM currently, correct?
Are you asking if you need to upgrade your motherboard in order to get more ram, or are you saying you’re going to upgrade your motherboard regardless?
You can upgrade just the ram. No need to change your motherboard.
For the easiest option you can check the Framework store. The Ryzen 7 7840HS would be part of the AMD Ryzen 7040 Series. So you select that under Framework 16, then memory and storage. Or just click this, https://frame.work/marketplace/memory-storage?compatibility[]=laptop_16. Ram of course is insanely expensive right now But if you have the money to spare, your Framework 16 will support 64GB (2 x 32GB), heck you can do 96GB even. Looks like the Framework store is out-of-stock at the moment, but it at least shows you the type of ram you’ll want to search for.
You can order a FW16 7840HS on the FW website and configure it with 96GB ram there. So 96GB is definitely supported. The 7840HS itself supports 256GB ram. In the community, someone has tried 128GB and it has worked.
No one has tried more than 128GB ram yet.
See how many ram chips your FW 7840HS already has, and then either decide to add a chip if one is empty, or buy 2 new larger chips to give you whatever size you need.
If you want to get a AI 300 mainboard, it can take similar to the 7840HS, except some particular manufacture’s ram chips that worked in the 7840HS do not work in the AI 300
I had at start configure my fw16 (7940HS) with 64Go of RAM.
in 06/2025 I find 128Go on Crucial for 334.98€ (Amazon.fr)
It work perfectly fine since then… But yes the price is completely different now, and did not know if there is many chose …
For 256Go … can’t never find SODIMM with that size… I think it is only possible with 4 SODIMM that is not possible on the FW16…
With the new price and Crucial stop making RAM It don’t think we will see a lot with 128Go .
it isn’t recommended to mix like 1x 32GB of corsairs 5600MHz and then 1x 32GB curcial 5600MHz since i read some where doing so could cause problems/unstable usage or so. Since it is not recommended by many to do such thing.
