What is a good wifi dongle for gaming?

I rather not have an internal wifi card that is crap/proprietary So I am asking does anyone know of an AX one that works well on linux? Let me know.

This is my info:

Devuan

Recent Stable

Its the kernel that came with it.

The one I received

AMD Ryzen™ 7640

Aren’t they all Realtek chipsets?

When you say gaming, does that include latency critical gaming?

A wired NIC. QED. wifi at best introduces 3-5ms of latency at worst 30-50ms irrespective of any other tuning. You can’t fight physics.

You will not find a “dongle” that does AX and is not proprietary. You might find one that’s open hardware and based on a non-proprietary design that does 802.11b here in 2024, but I suspect there is not a lot of research into producing open hardware consumer devices for modern WiFi standards that has resulted in anything.

You’re pretty much limited to Realtek for USB WiFi adapters.

You will also probably not find a “dongle” that is not “crap”.

Define better parameters for a more precise answer.

The recursive flow of this in my head… “Concise”.

The two choices are the Realtek RZ616 and Intel AX210 for the AMD board right?

@jwp is dead on. One can break a lot of rules in life but not the laws of physics.

Hardwired connections for the win every time. If gaming the laptop is already at place where it needs AC power to play for an extended period of time, use the force Luke! :electric_plug: :zap: :computer: = :racing_car:

Replace the Realtek one with an Intel AX200 or AX210. Works fine in Debian – but check you’ve got firmware installed.

(nth-ing the recommendation for wired networking.)

K3n.

Seems you misunderstood, I was saying I don’t want an internal wifi card that is proprietary. I never said I was looking for an open source dongle however.

I decided ultimately to get a brostrend one.

Edit: I actualy cancelled my order, because I realized the one I picked was too slow

Can you guys recommend one from amazon or ebay, etc?

Don’t care if it proprietary. I assume it will be. I only want my internal one to be Open source.

As for the dongle, i want it to be fast and good for gaming.

Seems i got no further replies for a bit. Meh… no worries though I got this one:

Works well too!
