Whats the difference between pd 3.1 and 3.0 for the framework 16 amd 7040?

this laptop is for school and as we all know, the battery on this laptop is kinda unreliable and while i do have the 180w framework charger, the psu is so big and clunky i dont really wanna have to lug it around unless i need to. id rather carry around my smaller, more portable but fairly powerful anker charger that outputs 100w max, pd 3.0. my other question is is it okay to use the anker charger instead while at school? i dont use a lot of energy hungry apps cuz its just school so it should be fine right? or should i strictly stick with the original framework charger? thanks in advance

You can absolutely use pretty much any PD-compatible charger. 100W is a great choice, but do keep in mind that if you run heavy CPU + GPU workloads that exceed the 100W power budget you might see the battery go down even while it’s plugged in.

I think there have been reports of some anker power adapters not being compatible with the FW16 and fail to supply any power to the laptop.
But, if the 100W one you have works, then it should be ok.
The FW16 dips into the battery for extra power when needed. So, the other side affect might be more battery wear and thus maybe a shortened battery life.
I would advise against using less that 100W power adapter.

I’m sorry to contradict you, @James3 , but if you’re not using any high-power-draw applications, you don’t need even a 100W charger. I regularly run my FW16 on an Anker 65W “Nano II” charger, specifically because it’s physically small enough to carry around easily. I do have more capacious chargers that I use when I’m running higher power-draw applications, but most of my work is text-based programming that doesn’t require much power.
