Windows Dynamic Refresh Rate not supported on 2.8k Display?

I guess maybe I was mistaken, but I thought the new display was supposed to support dynamic refresh rate in Windows, but when I go to the W11 refresh rate settings, I am told it’s not supported. Freesync is an option in AMD settings, so it definitely does support Variable Refresh Rate.

However, I was under the impression that Freesync only had an impact on games, whereas my understanding is that the Windows setting means that the refresh rate will also dynamically adjust based on what’s on screen in order to save battery. Am I wrong on this?

Is there any reason that Windows dynamic refresh rate is not supported?

(Other than that, it’s a great looking display, much better than the original.)

Edit: AMD 7840U for what it’s worth.

Might be that is only supported on 24H2? That one added a bunch of compatibility for dynamic refresh rate such that it also works with my desktop monitor (although it did not work well at all with VRR from the GPU).

I’m already on 24H2 so unfortunately that’s not it.

120Hz is killing my battery life, so it’s pretty unfortunate this feature of Windows to address this specific problem doesn’t work…

8/11: 9 hours 16 minutes
8/12: 7:10
8/13: 8:14
8/14: 8:59
new screen
8/15: 5:32
8/16: 6:56
8/17: 5:11

This feature requires at least version 3.0 of WDDM, if you run dxdiag (win+r, type ‘dxdiag’ and hit enter) what version WDDM does it show? Should be listed in the display tab.

Using AMD Adrenalin 24.7.1, dxdiag shows WDDM 3.2.

I have a similar issue here, Windows version 23H2 on a 7840U.
dxdiag reports WDDM 3.1.

What’s the FreeSync range reported?

https://www.amd.com/en/resources/support-articles/faqs/DH3-013.html

30-120 in Freesync.

I don’t know if this is exactly the same, but using windows 10 LTSC (which doesn’t have it labeled at dynamic refresh rate I believe), on the framework 16 the monitor will adjust from 60 hz to 165 hz when on battery vs plugged in (I think it perhaps saved them independently). On the 13 with the 2.8 monitor, it stays fixed at the last refresh rate I entered. I gather this might perhaps be related to the drivers?

Trying to get answers from Framework support on this about whether this is expected to be supported, and I have to admit it’s like pulling teeth. I’m sure they’re just going through the script and there’s nothing about anything like this in their support protocols, but I just want a simple question answered.

The current graphics drivers do not have freesync whitelisted for this panel.
AMD plans to release a graphics driver to us around the first week of September which will has Freesync enabled for this panel. We will start this as a beta on the community forum.

Hello everyone,
Are there any updates on this topic, since the first week of September has passed.

Still nothing on this?

Hi! Has a new timeframe for its release been communicated? Or, did I miss something? I don’t have my FW13 yet, but I’d love if VRR were functional on day one. (Batch 5, October).

Thanks!

Hi Kieran,

Any news on this? I will buy a fw13 depending on this feature.

Thank you

Still not supported in the driver update that came out on 02Oct.

Are there any further updates on this? Just got mine setup and updated, and the feature is still missing.

Would be nice to hear anything other than radio silence on this from FW now that we’re almost a month after when they thought a beta would be out, even if they are just waiting on AMD.

Hey Kieran, I recently ordered my FW thinking the driver would be released by the time it arrived. Any updates on this? Thanks
