like the title says, i’ve noticed some yellowing on my clear rgb numbpad module. i’ve been using my laptop for probably around a month or two now. i’m pretty sure it’s not due to my fingers having something nasty on them because the yellowing isn’t on the “primary” keyboard at all. i was wondering if anyone else is seeing issues like this and what i can do about it. if the answer is “buy another” - i would really rather not spend the money on a 2nd numpad (plus there’s no guarantee it won’t happen again), but i also don’t think there’s any way i can buy just the keycaps. i don’t know, this just really sucks to have happen so soon.
i’ve attached a photo, although i don’t know that it shows up all that well. the 2nd row from the top is the one it’s really prominent on, although the bottom 2 rows look a little different to me as well, but then again i might just be seeing a problem where there isn’t one, at least not yet.
I have the same setup and I don’t have this.
But, I used this laptop far away from any sunlight.
Out of curiosity, do you have this laptop next to a window? If yes, can you check and see if that specific area is hit by sunlight?
I’d be a bit disappointed if there’s no clear coating applied on this, as any transparent plastic can go yellow in time because of heating or, sunlight.
i do use it near a window, but not particularly often right now. i’m at home and have my big pc upstairs that i use more often, and i keep the laptop closed when not in use. i really didn’t expect any of the ways i’m using it to affect it at all. keep on keeping it away from sunlight i guess? lol
As mentioned, a lot of clear plastics will “yellow” over time. Some worse than others. I have a clear keyboard on my FW 13 and haven’t noticed any yellowing, but the numpad may be from a differnt supplier and may use a different material for the key caps. I haven’t noticed any yellowing on the clear numpad on my FW 16 either, but it’s relatively new and never in direct sunlight. I feel like UV light is probably the main factor (assuming you don’t have any harsh chemicals or solvents on your fingers, lol), so refraining from leaving it in direct sun may help, but if it’s a type of plastic that is particularly susceptible to yellowing (which it must be if it’s noticeable already), it will happen eventually, even if it’s not in direct sun.
