Yesterday my RX7700S died after only ~8 months of use

Purchased my Framework 16 late last year. I am running Linux and suffered a pretty bad hard crash under load yesterday evening. After rebooting the RX7700S is gone from the system bus. The kernel reports the following instead:

[ 4.864967] ACPI BIOS Error (bug): Could not resolve symbol [\_SB.PCI0.GPP9.SWUS.SWDS.VGA], AE_NOT_FOUND (20250807/dswload2-162)

followed by:

[ 4.885819] ACPI: \_SB_.PCI0.GPPA.VGA_.PWRS: New power resource

(According to AI GPP9 apparently is the PCI Express lane used to communicate between the mainboard and the GPU on the Expansion Bay)

And ofcourse this happened around 5 weeks before my holiday trip on which I planned to take my Framework with for the first time. So at the moment I am feeling a bit super sad…

Already send out a ticket to support, and as I tried pretty much everything I could imagine (which I also wrote in the ticket) I really hope they can get me a warranty replacement quickly…

Here’s some additional lspci info.

As you guys can clearly see the RX 7700 is dead (00:03.0 → 00:03.1 [c2]:

Hardware failures do happen. At least it happened under warranty for you.

Removing and reseating the card and the interposer are the only other things that come to mind while waiting for support. Glad a ticket was started already. That is the first avenue we commonly suggest. (We are all just end users here in the forums).

The integrated graphics on the Framework Laptop 16 is surprisingly robust for integrated graphics. So at least the laptop is still usable. Let us know how it turns out.

Yeah, I have sent them tons of info already including the lspci output above which clearly shows that the connection between the mainboard and GPU through the interposer completely broke down.

According to framework_tool and the EEPROM it inspects the interposer and expansion bay still seem to work fine though. Also there seems to be an attempt to handshake between the USB-C connector on the back and my external display when I connect it so some communication between laptop and the bay still seems to work too. I currently suspect something related to powering the GPU (VRM or something) on the bay went poof due to cooling (or lack thereof to be precise) .

Only hope they are not sending me on a three week witch hunt because I actually really need a working replacement before September 10 due to travel…

So I just discovered framework_tool has a banger of a sub command called console which enables you to directly follow EC debug messages in the console.

Around every millisecond the EC in my FW16 writes the following: init GPU failed (1)

So yeah, even the EC is convinced it is dead.

Update: After sending Support tons of information and some back and forth my ticket has been escalated.

For now the process has gone quite fast. Although I am sad some of my weeks off are wasted due to a half broken laptop I hope I’ll hear back something positive soon.
