Windows 11 (but willing to switch to something else if needed)
I got an 11th Gen motherboard in a mystery box and it seems to work fairly well. However, it’s got an ancient BIOS version installed - 3.02. I ordered a 61Wh battery and some other components to build out a functional machine. The docs suggest that a battery must be installed to perform the update, but but it’s unclear to me whether the 3.02 BIOS is compatible enough with the 61Wh battery to get the latest BIOS installed.
Anyone have any experience plugging the newer battery in to one of these boards before the firmware update with official support?
There is a section on the BIOS update article of the 11th gen here:
On section “Updating a Mainboard outside of a laptop“
That explains how to preform a BIOS update without battery. Perhaps this can be of help?
Personally i believe the “easiest” route to take is to just plug the laptop in with cable and preform the windows 11 BIOS update (AKA running the .exe), but to make EXPLICITLY sure that the mainboard doesn’t lose any power.
61Wh absolutely works with older BIOS however in order to get the most of it update to the latest BIOS to have battery extender function. So you can update your BIOS when using the 61Wh battery
