I understand parts will only be available once the 13 pro can be ordered immediately and is no longer shipping in batches, but I was wondering if anyone knew what the typical timeline for that is? I’m interested in getting either the input cover or the bottom cover upgrade kit.
Is it probably going to be post September (after batch 12 ships)? Or will that keep getting pushed back as pre-orders come in?
when I have asked a very similar question in the past, I got the answer when the new devices ships; that would be in June.
I hate to say it, but I don’t think anyone can know for sure, not even Framework. It depends on how many pre-orders they get, when people stop or seriously slow down. And it depends on how smoothly ramping up to mass production goes. Sometimes there are issues that introduce delays.
I believe somewhere they mentioned that more 13 pro pre-orders are coming in than expected.
It’d important to note that that is specifically about the intel, the AMD devices are still available from July. the parts are also sourced separately from the complete laptops, as they do not need to pass through the assembly line (maybe the chassi does?).
I’m super excited for the upgrade kit for my current Ryzen 9 mainboard. Hoping to be able to order the whole thing as a kit soon! 
Cannot wait to get my hands on the upgrade kit for my own AMD Framework 13. An upgradeable mainboard is one thing, but being able to upgrade your chassis to a different, improved “model” is very cool. It pushes the boundaries of what it means to have a fully upgradeable laptop!
Yeah, I also want to upgrade the chassis to farewell the current gen awful trackpad. Hopefully the chassis isn’t that pricey, and they’ll have clear notes on compatibility - what new and old works together.
An interesting idea for those wanting to upgrade their bottom chassis, is that we could opt into a whole new bottom half (inc mainboard etc), attach the new bottom half to our old bottom half, and then demote the old bottom half to run in headless operation:
So rather than the coolermaster route and a leftover old chassis that we have to aftermarket, we can skip the coolermaster route and have a battery powered headless machine with the old chassis.
I don’t get why the pre-order options don’t let have a “bring your own motherboard” option when almost everything else can be. I simply cannot afford to replace my whole 7040 rn even if my usage is starting to outpace the hardware. The manufactured RAM crisis is just getting worse and worse, especially since Framework just announced they’re doubling the price of modules (understandably). I can’t justify replacing parts like my 75% health battery and my truly unreliable trackpad for the third time with the older parts.
Not to be dramatic, I know I’m in a bit of a bad mood because my battery’s EC is also failing, but this honestly feels like punishment for the people who do not want to create ewaste or want to embrace the 1st principle of framework machines: upgrades at your own pace. I know y’all need to make money, but please. If I have to buy another trackpad this year when the haptic trackpad is shipping to customers because the plastics warp from heat and the alignment drifts over time, I’m going to have to up my antidepressants.
Edit: Batches are all the way out to December?? It took me three attempts to get my trackpad to register a click just to edit this. Framework, please. I’m begging.
I am in a similar boat as you. I am a college student and currently not using my fw13 for classes, instead I am relying on my android tablet because my fw13 can only make it 1 or 2 45 minute classes before it dies. In it’s defense it is an i5-1240p with 32gb of ram, the original non matte display, and the 55 watt-hour battery that is now 4 years old at 83% health. My chassis also has not enjoyed 4 years of torture, one of the rubber feet is missing, its dented in one corner from a fall from my bag a few years ago, and the screen is etched with grime from the keyboard. I have pretty much outpaced the 1240p and am pushing the 32gb of ram at 90+% a lot of the time, especially now that I am doing classes requiring me to emulate android phones. But this manufactured ram crisis means I cannot afford to buy a 13 pro with a new mainboard, I could not justify even the 8gb version of the cheapest mainboard. My 13 is really holding on for dear life here and its been months and months of waiting. Please framework, let me give you my money!
I’d be inclined to recommend buying a new 55W/hr battery and then keeping the FW 13 going for a couple more years, even if it turns out that new parts will be available in a month. It would at least buy you a bit more life in the old unit.
The original announcement was back in April. It’s now been almost five months and not only are the promised upgrade parts still unavailable, which is literally the core of Framework’s entire philosophy, but you still can’t even order a Framework Laptop 13 Pro in silver. Hell, some of the upgrade parts don’t even have prices listed yet.
Also, having “Coming Soon” plastered across all of them for months just feels like waving a treat in front of a dog’s face and never actually giving it to them.
At this point, I’m just confused as to why these were announced so far in advance when existing customers still can’t actually buy the parts needed to upgrade.
If you only know much larger laptop companies and don’t consider Framework’s much smaller manufacturing capacity and pre-order system I guess the confusion is understandable. They’ll only be able to make 13 Pro parts available separately after 13 Pro pre-orders have been fulfilled.
All new Framework laptops have been done as pre-orders. Currently they are still working through manufacturing and fulfilling the 13 Pro pre-orders. Until that’s done, they don’t have the extra 13 Pro parts available for those looking to buy them to upgrade previous model laptops.
What about the silver version of the 13 Pro? or the prices not being listed?
We’ve all heard, after 143 days of waiting, that they need to fulfil pre-orders before moving to selling Pro chassis kits and the other Pro parts. They probably have logistical challenges as well. I don’t want to be patient, and it would be nice to just be able to place an order and have a vague timeline.
Exactly. Honestly it would be nice if we could place pre-orders on parts. It would probably help them too since they can slowly figure out the demand like they do with new products already.
Same boat. I feels like I have to choose between buying a new laptop (more waste!) or sticking with my falling apart one for what feels like well into next year. I really love what Framework is doing, but this just really stinks as a customer. Seriously considering jumping ship soon.
Since we are likely never going to get access to these parts at a reasonable price or time frame, as far as Framework is concerned, we have effectively jumped ship. I reached out to their support begging them to allay my concerns and it was just a long, automated, Ai-generated message that could be simplified to “sowwy, keep checking the product page for updates 
”.
I’m going to have to go back to my inherited 8th Gen T490 just to have functional battery life and reliable trackpad at this rate. But that’s no skin off of Framework’s nose. They took my money.
I’m happy for everyone who’s enjoyed their experience with Framework; I know Framework loves turning it into marketing material. But I don’t think they’re as aligned with their marketing materials as they say they are, which is a tragedy. I upgraded from my T490 because I had been tinkering and modifying it for years. When Framework hit the scene as Lenovo essentially killed their T lineup, it felt like kismet. Another one bites the dust, I guess.
Honestly, the 0.1% of grumbling in this thread is wildly unreasonable. MJ1 has already succinctly explained the situation:
If anyone must leave the ecosystem, then it is what it is, but perhaps other customers can be permitted to enjoy their repairable and open-source-friendly hardware. If I was in this situation, and my existing hardware was absolutely at death’s door, I’d be getting a second-hand laptop from a local supplier or eBay, and then reselling it when FW parts become available.
How many generations of framework devices is this excuse going to last? Yes, they are not a trillion dollar company, and yes they do not have the unlimited money that a manufacturer like Dell has. But they still have promises they made that they are not fulfilling. Part of the $1,200 I spent on my FW13 was towards the promise of being able to repair and upgrade the device. By the time this generation’s upgrade promises are fulfilled they will be announcing the next generation. The demand for these products shouldn’t be surprising to this company anymore. I get these problems for their first couple of generations, but we are now years and several distinct product lines in and they still cannot seem to properly arrange capacity. Framework is not making their own CPUs, not making their own memory, there is capacity and stock out there to fulfill the demand providing framework seeks them out adequately. Being small does not framework immune to criticism.
