2 to 3 hours of use | Ubuntu | Framework 13 12th generation intel

Hi everyone,

I have been having issues with the battery life of my FW 13 12th gen ever since I got it some years ago. To be more precise, I get around 2 and up to 3 hours of battery life with medium usage (some browsing and some light coding). Even if I am just sitting in class and writing notes on a pdf I barely get 3 hours of usage. I would be extremely helpful for any advice

To give more details on my exact setup:

Hardware: Framework Laptop 13, Intel Core i5-1240P (12th gen) with 64 GB ram
OS: Ubuntu, kernel 6.17.0-19
Power management: TLP 1.6.1 (active, default config), power-profiles-daemon removed

However, even before my switch to Ubuntu from windows my battery life was very similar.

Using upower, I’ve been measuring 13 to 14 W of power draw during light work at around 25% screen brightness and only a usb A and usb c adopters installed.

At that draw rate, my full charge capacity of 46.9 Wh gives roughly 3.5 hours. This matches what I observe in practice.

Battery health from upower:

energy-full-design: 55.0 Wh
energy-full: 46.9 Wh
capacity: 85.3%

I have read the entry on optimizing battery life so maybe I could switch to PPD, but otherwise I was unsure if there is much I should be doing differently.

Otherwise, do you think this would be solved with switching mainboards?

Any help would be super appreciated.

Best,
Fred

I didn’t like my 11th gen Intel board’s battery life at all. It similarly could clock in only a handful of hours no matter what I did. Slapped it in a cooler master case and have it as a backup PC now, which I think it’s better suited for.

I changed over to an AMD board about a year ago and found the battery life has roughly doubled, between keeping screen brightness lower and relying on Auto-CPUFreq to manage power consumption on battery.
