7040 cooling improvement with ryzen 300 heatsink

Hello there,

I’m the new owner of a Framework 13 7640. The main drawbacks I’m facing is related to cooling. The cooling performance of the ryzen 300 heatsink are known to be greater. I’ve ordered the ryzen 300 heatsink thinking I could swap it with the current one.

Do you think it’s a reasonable play ?

Also the heatsink is coming with thermal pads, but framework also sell thermal paste. I was wondering if swapping the pads for the thermal paste was a way to improve cooling.

The thermal pads will cool VRMs, you should not replace it with thermal paste. Maybe you mean the applied PTM to cool the CPU. You should not replace it with thermal paste either.

90% of the cooling improvement is due to PTM7958. You can buy and apply PTM7950 to your heat sink and get similar cooling

You are right.

I’ve made the replacement (with ryzen 300) and the improvement isn’t as much as I expected.

Did you have thermal paste or PTM before?

I guess it was thermal paste, it’s was a 7640 bought recently (end 2025)

Which improvement do you see?

So what you’re all saying is I shouldn’t have replaced my 13” 7040 thermals with this and should get a PTM7950 instead?

Yes. I replaced the thermal paste with PTM7950 on my ryzen 7640u and at idle it hovers around 40C. While thermal grizzly and that would probably be better than the stock paste, PTM7950 is so much better for not that much more.
