I have my FW13 laptop connected to a large external 5K monitor (Dell U4021QW) via a brand new FW USB-C connector and a high quality USB-C cable in the back right port (towards the hinge). I use this monitor as a second screen in addition to the laptop’s screen. The Dell monitor also supplies the laptop with power through the same cable and nothing else is connected to the laptop.

For reasons I cannot (yet) identify, the Dell monitor blanks out to black for around one to two seconds, sometimes as often as every couple of seconds, sometimes only every 10 minutes or so. This is really annoying.

I previously had a Ryzen 7040 connected with the exact same Ubuntu installation (I simply swapped the disk over to the new Ryzen AI laptop), with the exact same cable and exact same monitor and didn’t see any such behavior there.

syslog doesn’t show anything that seems related.

How can this be fixed?

“Fixed” this the expensive way by replacing the monitor with the newer U4025QW model. Same FW USB-C connector and same cable as before but no more issues now. Looks like the previous pair didn’t go well together for some reason.
