I don’t always want to leave cards in the laptop, specially considering some may consume battery even in suspend mode.
Are there plans for or existing place-holders available ?

Although this isn’t ideal, if you have access to a 3d printer, you can print your own - CAD files are here (there are also services you can ask to 3d print things for you if you don’t have access to one) I agree, this option would be a perfect addition to the marketplace.
The USB-C expansion cards are just an electrical pass-through (sort of like a very short USB-C extension cable in a weird form-factor), so they don’t use any extra power when nothing’s plugged into them, and they’re cheap.
