I tried to make the topic as descriptive as I could.
What I mean by it is: No matter if the function row is set as multimedia or F1-12, when I hold “alt”, “ctrl” or “shift” they should automatically work as F1-12 keys. And releasing them will return to the previous setting.
example: fn row is set as multimedia since that is what I use most of the time. I use a quick shortcut like alt+F4 and the computer skips back music instead of closing the active window.
I have used keyboards with multimedia keys and some other laptops with the same feature and it just makes sense. I can probably do this in autohotkey when I get to it but I think this should be in firmware.
BTW: how do i add tags to a topic? I want to give it a feature-request tag
This will be an option in the keyboard firmware on the Framework-16 due to using QMK firmware, which has that kind of functionality built-in. The Framework-13 doesn’t have this option since it doesn’t use QMK. You’d have to use a utility within your operating system to do it. Sounds like you’re on Windows, yes? I’m afraid I only know how to do it on Linux.

Oh yes. I’ll take care of it in software When something gets annoying, I’ll do what I can to deal with it.
But for the less tech savvy, I think the feature should be there from the start.
Please. Do tell me how to do it in linux. I’m slowly losing patience with windows so I’ll most likely switch to ubuntu or mint soon.
Kmonad if you want to do more advanced things. But it has a learning curve.
I would recommend Mint over ubuntu. Ubuntu forces snap apps upon users. They take up much more room in storage and start up slower, sometimes much slower. App packages such as snap which are self-contained with their dependencies do have their place, with Mint it’s not forced upon you.
I sure know losing patience with windows, I very rarely boot into windows, but the other day I do. Just out of curiosity to check how the windows version of an app looked. Have to wait for windows to apply updates before it even starts. Then trying to reboot into Linux, and it sits for ages with more updates before it will shut down.
Feels insane coming from Linux, where most updates apply in the background with no need to reboot. And there is never waiting at startup, shutdown or reboot.
