It is great to see the Desktop making full use of the potential of the Ryzen AI Max but given that the APU is reported to yield really decent results also limited power draws, it is a really important question for me if there will be at least any form of option for an eco mode where it is running at less than 120W (maybe 80W or so), even better would be a number of power limit options.
I am thinking of building a fully passively cooled setup and do plan to achieve a cooling performance fit for max power but having some fall back option in case that cooling doesn’t quite cope with that would be great.
I think other threads have already covered the prospect of third-party coolers and stated that it’s very unlikely that there’s anything suitable on the market at this time.
I am not approaching this from the perspective of buying any third party coolers. This is a DIY project of mine, way outside of any warranty of course. I plan on designing my own cooler.
For that it would be good to have options to adjust power consumption limits, if need be.
PS: This is not my first project of that kind. I am writing this from my previous custom passive mod (see here: Reddit - The heart of the internet). But of course, a 28W APU is a much simpler target.
Since I have the Framework Desktop mainboard now I can answer my own question.
There is no option in the bios. However, much better than that. The power management option in the OS is actually really meaningful and offers three very distinct power levels.
Performance: 140W boost for 10 min, 120W sustained Balanced: Very short 115W boost, 100W sustained
Power Save: ~50W (CPU max frequency set to 3GHz)
Important to know: The stock setting is “Balanced”, if you want the advertised 140/120W you need to set it to performance, wherever that power management settings are in your OS. I am very happy with Balanced and those 100W TDP. It is a very nice efficiency/performance gold spot.
