Bluetooth stopped working (Ubuntu, Framework 16)

THE PROBLEM: Bluetooth has stopped working. Specifically, it to longer appears in Settings. Weirdly, systemctl thinks it’s running, but bluetoothctl and hciconfig can’t find it:

I’ve followed may instructions for fixing this (including Ubuntu Bluetooth Troubleshooting Guide ), but nothing seems to work.

Could you run lsusb and lspci to show us the various devices in your computer?

When you paste them here, please use the code formatting tool (see the </> icon) to format the two blobs of output.

Also consider typing “Blue” in your Ubuntu start menu - there should be an app for this installed by default. In my Linux Mint installation, I have Blueman. Click on that and click around. Add some screenshots of that here. You may need to discover whether BT is enabled or not, and this app should tell you.

OK, super. The two mentions of “MediaTek” are good.

Now see if the driver is loaded: sudo modprobe btusb. Also, see what you get for bluetoothctl list.

$ sudo modprobe btusb
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'btusb': Key was rejected by service
$ bluetoothctl list
$

Lovely, a new avenue for research! Error messages are always good.

That is the bluetooth device. It is a USB device.

Since bluetoothd is running but no controller appears in bluetoothctl or hciconfig, I’d check the kernel/device layer next rather than restarting the service repeatedly. `dmesg -w` while toggling the hardware switch or rebooting can show firmware/USB/PCI errors; `rfkill list` will also distinguish a blocked radio from a missing controller. On Framework 16, a full shutdown (not just restart) and reseating or temporarily removing the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth module can help isolate a module/firmware issue. If the adapter is absent from `lsusb`/`lspci`, collect those outputs before changing BlueZ settings.

Same problem here. Same laptop and OS as well

Slightly different outputs:

$ sudo modprobe btusb
$ bluetoothctl list
$ hciconfig
hci0:	Type: Primary  Bus: USB
	BD Address: 00:00:00:00:00:00 ACL MTU: 0:0 SCO MTU: 0:0
	DOWN INIT RUNNING
	RX bytes:0 acl:0 sco:0 events:0 errors:0
	TX bytes:0 acl:0 sco:0 commands:0 errors:0

I don’t follow all of this.

dmesg -w produces a huge amount of output, probably too much to reasonably paste here. What would I be looking for?

I don’t know how I would run a command “while toggling the hardware switch or rebooting”.

rfkill list gives:

0: phy0: Wireless LAN
	Soft blocked: no
	Hard blocked: no

Trying to re-seat the wireless module looks quite elaborate ( Framework Laptop 16 Wi-Fi Module Replacement - iFixit Repair Guide , right?), so I’d prefer trying potential software solutions first.

As mentioned previously in the thread, the device (apparently the “MediaTek Inc. Wireless_Device”) does show up in lsusb.

Try this: dmesg | grep -iE 'secure boot|module|btusb|key' to narrow it down.

(Note that this scrolls.)

$ sudo dmesg | grep -iE 'secure boot|module|btusb|key'

[60792.550171] Loading of module with unavailable key is rejected

My research suggests that “Loading of module with unavailable key is rejected” is the cause. The error is suggesting that your driver isn’t signed (which could happen if, for example, you built this module yourself).

Could you temporarily get into the BIOS and try disabling Secure Boot? I think that might fix it. You can always bump it back again if you’d prefer a different solution.

Disabling secure boot did the trick – thanks!
