Boot problem on Framework 13 laptop 11th gen intel (linux)

Dear All, my Framework 13 laptop 11th gen intel (with linux mint 22 only) has been working fine for more than a year, but recently it doesn’t start any more, nothing happens when I push the power button, although the battery is fully charged!! It only boots after I plug the power supply, but does keep running when I remove the cord after startup.

Bios version: INSYDE Version: 03.17. Tried updating via fwupd but I don’t think this actually works on the UEFI/Bios.
Recently upgraded fromt Linux Mint 21 to 22 but this worked ok for a week.

OS: Linux Mint 22 x86_64 Kernel: 6.8.0-55-generic
DE: Cinnamon 6.2.9
:WM: Mutter (Muffin)
.CPU: 11th Gen Intel i5-1135G7 (8) @ 4.200GHz
GPU: Intel TigerLake-LP GT2 [Iris Xe Graphics]
Memory: 5586MiB / 15777MiB

I swapped the battery about 6 months ago for a more powerful one, but this also worked OK until one week ago.
I cannot decide whether it’s a hardware or a BIOS issue or possibly a software thing, shutdown seems to work ok.
Thanks for any ideas!

This sounds like the RTC battery problem. Plenty of folks have posted about this in the forums here, and the solution is to contact support.

Hi! Fortunately a BIOS/EFI update to 3.20 seemed to solve the issue, laptop boots again normally. Apparently the stronger battery needed this update to fully make use of its capacity. my fault for not updating earlier. Thanks for the reply!

As I understand it the “fix” for the rtc problem is resting the motherboard, I am pretty sure the bios updating process does that and more.

Ah No, Unfortunately the problem is back ! No start without the power cable possible. when I plug it in, LED lights up orange, thenn green after a while. When I push the power button nothing happens for a while, then eventually it will boot. So as asonix mentioned, the CMOS battery is the problem? Thx

reset the motherboard leave it on charger for 24 hours, if the problem reaper contact support.

they should give you a choice between a new rtc battery, and an rtc battery deletion modification kit for the motherboard.

Thanks! You mean reset like in this post:

Yes, that is what I’m referring to. if you feel uncomfortable doing it on my advise, contact support first.
