Hello, Recently bought a framework 13 and I am using it as a handheld, but before I go out of my way to buy more parts just to realize they don’t work, is there any way to view the bios via a external monitor as my first attempt just resulted in a black screen or it just wouldn’t show and are there any utilities or suggestions to someone who is new to framework should know?
Is your primary in-device screen no longer working?
If that is the case, I wonder if disconnecting it fully would cause the BIOS to show on an HDMI expansion card. I’ve no idea if that would work, just speculating.
In my case, the following connection chain would display the BIOS on the external monitor:
- Laptop → HDMI expansion card → external monitor’s HDMI input
- Laptop → USB-C expansion card → TB4 dock → DisplayPort → external monitor’s DP input
There are likely more connection scenarios that work…but these are the two for me (Intel 11th gen). I imagine the AI 300 series would be similar.

The laptop itself does not have its internal display, bought just the board and a few other parts to make a handheld, so the laptop boots up and shows the windows loading screen but never any messages of like what keys to press to open the bios.
Ah, in that case, I agree with @Second_Coming - one of their options should work. I think boot-menu is F1, BIOS is F2, but if it doubt, mash the keyboard!
Well with that possibly solved, anyone got suggestions for a touchscreen and some kind of handheld controllers that would work with the framework 13? Still got a budget of about 140$ left after buying the main board and its components.
Tried looking into switch joycons as they seem like something that would work but not even sure how they would be charged and how they would connect with the laptop or how that would work in general and where to find like a 7 inch touchscreen, have seen others make handhelds with the framework 13 but either have prebuilt controllers or entirely custom controllers.
