Getting graphic output from a bare mainboard?

Hello! I recently upgraded to the Ryzen mainboard and I’m trying to re-use my old mainboard. The problem I’m running into is I can’t get a visual output from the mainboard when it’s powered on so that I can see the BIOS in order to install Linux or do anything else really.

I’ve seen a lot of posts saying to use the HDMI expansion port… but they don’t detail how to do this. I have the HDMI port and have tried plugging it into a display from multiple of the USB-C outputs but haven’t had any luck getting an image out. Is there some kind of setup I have to do before it can work?

I’m running just the mainboard with 32 GB of RAM and powering it on via SW1 with an HDMI output attempting to go to a monitor.

Thanks!

Did you make sure to set up Standalone Mode in the BIOS?

ahhhhhh I did not. Is there a way to do that without being able to see the bios? Otherwise I fear I will have to disassemble my current machine

Sadly I don’t think so.

Only thing I can think might work besides dismantling your current build is a USB-C to USB-C connection on an external monitor, and even that is a big maybe at best.

Actually, try this thread. Somebody said they got it to work (admittedly on AMD, but give it a shot):
