Cannot get the framework 16 with 7700s to be utilized

So when running applications like stable diffusion or some games I noticed under task manager that the 7700s GPU never gets utilized, instead it tries the 780m or cpu. I have added under windows sytem setings – graphics the application to use the 7700s, but it never does. I also noticed in amd adrenaline that no matter what setting I choose it does not utilize it. In device manager it does not show any problems and seems to be functioning. I have also tried disabling the 780m and it STILL does not utilize it. I have also tried using ubuntu 24.04 and also tried using containers to do the same job, but the 7700s stays quiet.
I have updated the most recent drivers bundle for framework 16 which only shows one bundle to select.
I have had nothing but problems getting performance out of this box ever since I received it, the battery I have followed the wiki and for both operating systems, it seems that windows is the only stable OS / option since the GUI experience is absolute garbage in ubuntu. Especially the mouse and battery (yes I have applied all the required settings) is hardly usable, but most importantly there seems to be no way for the 7700s to be utilized.

  • Which OS (Operating System)? : windows 11, but have used ubuntu 24.04 as well and wsl

Hi,

In Linux, does “vulkaninfo” see all the GPUs? When you answer above “both” I assume you mean both windows and Linux.

Vulkan info will give a gfxNNNN id for each GPU or CPU it sees. Can you report back which gfx it is seeing?

in Windows 11, the latest update introduced a LOT of bugs, make sure re-install all drivers properly if you updated throught windows update.
Can you try to use the AMD Software, inside “Games/Graphism” select Hybrid for AMD SmartAccess and save
after go in display settings in windows and select the .exe of the application you want to run and instead of “let windows choose” select the rx 7700 and test if it work

I Think I have positive updates, not perfect but at least I can get the 770 to do work. Under windows–> settings— system-----display----graphics custom options for apps. I added powershell python wsl and other applications to test ollama llama3.1 and 3.2. and specified to use the 770s and it worked!! while it did not run very fast it was expected behavior due to the size of mem needed. Regardless I have at least one application that I can make use the 770s :slight_smile:
