FW16 RX7700S isn't getting used when playing games?

Hi folks,

I’m having trouble getting the RX7700S to be used with my games. For example, when I play Overwatch2 it feels really really slugish. FPS is around 60 but boy do the frames drop when i run around. Now i’m trying to play FTL which is a pretty damn simple and old game. There’s no AGP to GPU notification toast that pops up. There’s like nothing happening in TASK MANAGER.

I’m not sure what settings I need to set to make all games just auto flick over to GPU and go max usage. I’m on mains power.

OS: windows 11
Drivers: Latest AMD drivers from their site. I originally installed the Framework ones but then updated the AMD’s via the official website.

Please help :frowning:

Do you have AMD Adrenalin installed? Try adding your game to the games list and starting it from the Adrenalin app.

When i use an EGPU i had this problem. In Windows 11 there is an option (i’m not at home to look it up exactly) in the settings that lets you assign priority for programs as to which card to use. Otherwise it mostly defaults in my case to the internal on chip graphics instead of the EGPU. Once I tell it to use the EGPU as a priority for the programs i want to run on an EGPU if it is plugged in it will use the egpu as the default for that program.

Some games (like civ 6) also let you select the GPU to use in the settings of the game. it was driving me crazy that it wouldn’t switch despite having set windows to use the EGPU on that game. so once I selected the EGPU option in CIV6 and restarted it works off the egpu like it should. If you want to see which gpu the system is using just open the resource monitor you can see both GPUs and the one that spools up when you load the program is the one the laptop is using to run the program.

I have discovered that even though windows should automatically use the best video card for the program it doesn’t, to me it seemed like it went with the most efficient power wise gpu even though the machine is on wall power with a 6900xt in an egpu enclosure running from the laptop to EGPU and then to a monitor for output vs using the internal screen.

Yep - i’ve done it from that and it didn’t flick to the RX7700S

I would recommend you try the solution mentioned above. Go to Settings → System → Display → Graphics and adjust the game you want to play to use the high performance graphics.

Ok, i did this for the game FTL and … started it and i got no popup/toast suggesting APU → GPU switch over.

How can I confirm that the game is ONLY using the RX GPU?

Check using Task Manager. Go to the Performance tab and see which device is experiencing more usage. Also you can try pulling up the Radeon Overlay in AMD Adrenalin to check system stats.

Before I check the Task Manager, will there ALWAYS be some “popup” displayed when i switch between AGU (or whatever the 780M is called) and GPU (RX7700S) ?

When i did check the Task Manager there was basically 1% being used. i would have though FTL would have used more % than that.

I’m also unsure of what happened with the popup. It used to be whenever I opened Blender, it would always show that it was switching to dGPU, but recently it stopped for some unknown reason.

Could you post a screenshot of Task Manager while your game is open?

the popup is when the system switches from using the igpu for final rendering to using the dgpu

is smart mux switching enabled in the driver options?

is smart mux switching enabled in the driver options?

um- i’m not sure? what does this mean? where to check, please? (sorry if I sound like a noob)

The setting should be in AMD Adrenalin in the configuration settings. I can’t guarantee this though because I do not have my Framework 16 with me. I know it is part of Adrenalin, but not which section it is in.

Thanks for the clue Elliot. I’ve not been able to find it when I’ve had a look.

Also Elliot, when your computer ‘wakes from sleep’ does the Adrenalin app always show and come into focus even if it was ‘closed’ prior falling into sleep state?

Cry. So i tried playing Overwatch2 on MEDIUM settings. Ran like a slow dog. Was so bad. Did the GPU get used. Yep. it was running at about 50% GPU usage on MEDIUM. Srsly? FPS were jumping around a lot. not stable. sure, they were between 130 odd. but jumping around up/down 30-50fps ranges. ANd it was really ‘heavy’ feeling. mouse was so unresponsive. felt like i was playing in sand or something. Such an awful experience. My previous machine was a Legion lappy with an nvidia 2060M or whatever they are and on medium it plays so much smoother.

I seriously hope this was not a waste of money.

The 7700S should be able to handle OW2 smoothly. ESPECIALLY on medium. URGH. i’m so depressed right now.

I feel like the computer is trying to be to damn smart and it’s not working :frowning:

Do you have the power adapter plugged in, the Framework 16 severely limits the power draw on the dGPU when it is not plugged in. Plugging it in gives it the full 100W it can use up.

It is very likely that the dGPU is not using its full performance if you are only seeing around 50% GPU Usage. Try plugging it in as well as changing your performance mode in Windows to High Performance. This setting should be in the battery section of system.

Also, I do not recall AMD Adrenalin popping up every time I turned on my computer from sleep.

Yes. i’ve plugged my power/monitor/mouse/keyboard into a DELL Universal Dock D6000.
that then connects to my FW16 via the usbc hole in the 7700S.

So i’m 100% on mains power.

Try plugging in the power directly into the laptop. It is very likely that the dock is not providing the full 180W as old docks usually use the old USB PD cap at 100W.

After doing some research on your dock, the Dell dock only provides 65W on the USB PD out. That is severely bottlenecking your performance. Plug the charger into the top row of ports on the Framework 16.

Finally have an update.

I had to order a DP to USBC cable. Plugged it in (directly to the USBC hole in the 7700S) and tried OW. Played totally fine now! So yep. the Docking Station was the culprit.

-THAT SAID-

When I checked what settings I had in OW2 it says i was playing with the 780M ?! (and this is on pumped up ulta running and was locked (somehow) at 160FPS)

Checking Task Manager, it was showing the 7700S running at around 80% and the 770M a 1% or so.

So … I donno what to think there :frowning:

But I think it’s a-ok now
