Can't write to 1 terabyte expansion cards without all expansion cards disconnecting

- Which OS (Operating System)?

Windows 11.

- Which release of your OS (Operating System / Windows 10, 11, Distribution of Linux)?

25H2. OS Build 26200.7623. Bios version 3.04. No windows updates available.

- Which Framework laptop (11th, 12th or 13th generation Framework laptop) are you asking for support with?

Framework 16. This is actually for the AI 9 370 HX, I was only able to find a tag for the previous generation.

Hey all. I’ve been experiencing problems with my Framework 1 terabyte expansion cards on my framework 16. I’m sitting here, right now, trying to download the 2 gigabyte driver package for this laptop to one of my three 1 terabyte expansion cards because its a really good and easily accessible example, not because my drivers or bios are out of date. Every 3 seconds I have to hit “retry” because all three cards (remember, only one is currently being accessed right now) disconnect and reconnect every few hundred megabytes causing the download to fail. It’s not just chrome downloads, other operations fail as well. The strange part is that running a long benchmark (such as through crystaldiskmark) doesnt fail. It’s only when I actually try to write to any of the 3 cards that all 3 disconnect and reconnect at the same time. It keeps doing this until the download or whatever operation is complete.

Any ideas? I’ve disabled all relevant power saving settings, that doesnt seem to have changed anything. I’m on wall power. Nothing that I can find appears in event viewer or Windows “Reliability History” panel in control panel that I just discovered a few hours ago. These drives do work as expected when connected to other computers. Thanks for your time.

Sorry to be that guy… not quite uninformed stab: whatever Windows uses to identify the device is ambiguous and causes an “addressing” conflict. Retry your experiment with only a single storage expansion installed.

I think this is something to raise with fw support via their web site form.
I guess there is a bug in the usb 3.2 chip firmware that needs fixing.

Hi. I think I’ve seen this a few times after the crash in Task Manager. It’ll show one big drive with the capacity of two of the expansion cards sometimes. I did retry my experiment with only one expansion card connected, and the same thing happens. The download does not finish, I’m sitting here pressing retry download every few hundred megabytes like before.

They sent me a new motherboard and a new expansion card. The issue still persists. I’ve expanded the issue to every flash drive, trying to install ubuntu on this thing is like hard mode because the desktop ui fails to load. I’m running out of things to swap out. Any ideas, anyone?
