Car charger (60W) that's reliable and well-built?

Hi there, I saw there was a previous thread about car chargers, but it recommended one pretty similar to the one I’ve already tried. The one I’ve tried is this one by WOTOBEUS (one of those Amazon brands that seems to have 3 or 4 of the same product by different brand names).

it worked well for like a month and then started getting really flaky, only working if I jiggled it around in the charger. A review of a really similar one tells the story better:

1.0 out of 5 stars failed quickly - apparently poor design “The positive contact is of apparently poor design. This type of charger usually has a spring loaded positive contact that moves freely. This contact worked that way for a short period of time, then froze. It no longer acts as a spring loaded movable contact. Consequently, it fails to maintain electrical contact when the slightest vibration occurs.”

It also just started falling apart, literally breaking in half at one point!

Can anyone recommend a car charger that’s 60W+ and has a well designed spring loaded contact? Only USB-C is fine as I intend to only use this to charge the laptop - I already have wireless chargers and plenty of USB-A ports in the car. Previously I had a car to A/C converter box but that’s pretty large if you add a charging brick to it, so a small one like this but that’s just better designed would be awesome.

Thanks in advance for any recs!

Nice thanks for the recommendation! I picked up a 112W LinkOn https://smile.amazon.com/LinkOn-Charger-MacBook-Google-Chromebook/dp/B085YGJXZR/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?keywords=LinkOn%2B84W%2BUSB-C&qid=1663860690&sr=8-2-spons&th=1 as I don’t really need 2 USB-A ports. Will report back on how it is.

Hey Zach, so… how is it? :upside_down_face:

Hey, thanks for the welcome and for the response. Too bad the link does not work anymore. The closest to your specifications should be this one (https://amzn.eu/d/iUxRL3F), but it has only 60W. I have a FW16 and they recommend 100W. Is this much necessary or will it just load slower with 60W, but still be enough?

An alternative would be this one (https://amzn.eu/d/a560mfo) with 100W, but is has another “Plus Contact” and it’s not the same as yours. So I am not sure, if it will work.

The reason I’m asking, of course I could just buy it, but I tried another one from Ugreen (Amazon.de) already and it is not working. It’s only charging the FW16 while turned off. If I plug it while turned on, it’s switching charging on and off every second. And I do not want to buy several charger to see if any is working and I definitely do not want the charger to go off in flames like some reviews state.

Edit: Yeah, I overlooked the tag “fw13”… sorry.

haha, sorry. yeah, of course I meant “charge”. In german we use the same word for “loading” and “charging”, so for a second I used the wrong translation. :see_no_evil:

thanks for your help. I will try that one.

Hey @duksomi , it really worked quite well for a while! Charged the laptop fine. I worked with it in the car for months with no issues although it did get a bit hot.

Recently I switched to a Highland Model 3 though which has enough juice through it’s USB-C port to charge my Framework Laptop 13. I moved this charged to my Subaru where I rarely use my laptop. But it’s a nice high-powered phone charger for my Pixel 5 and my partner’s Pixel 8.

Thanks, this is good to know. That two different products worked well with the FW. I ordered one already since @anon81945988 was happy with it for 2 years now and your response makes me confident that it wasn’t pure luck for him.

So, thanks again.

thanks for the pics. As I can see, you don’t even use it in an easy enviroment. Looks like wood dust or something similar. I hope mine will be as durable as yours.
