Community Survey : Framework Laptop 13 New Features Thread

Hey everyone!

We’re curious — what new features would you love to see in future versions of the Framework Laptop 13?

Things like:

  • OLED or touch screen

  • Haptic touchpad

  • New expansion cards

  • Anything else that would make your experience even better

This post is just for new feature ideas, not improvements or things to fix ( you can vote for those in this thread: Community Survey : Framework Laptop 13 Improvement Poll)

Drop your suggestions in the comments below!

YEEEEEES (also glossy oled pls)

Appart from and oled display:

  • Built in 4G/5G (is going to need mainboard changes and more antennas)
  • LPCAMM memory
  • Use the space gained by using LPCAMM for a wwan/second ssd slot (or even both if there is somehow enough space)
  • Somehow expose the unused pcie lanes via occulink or something (probably going to need extra holes in the case)
  • Fw 12 style plastic case (maybe with better hinge design so it work well when closed too)
  • First party dual usb-c expansion card

Here’s my list.

A Framework released placeholder expansion card, so you can essentially cover USB-C ports you don’t need or aren’t using with nothing.

A touch screen.

An input cover with no touchpad and the keyboard nearer to the front edge, or the touchpad above the keyboard on the input cover.

A chassis allowing for an easy exchange/removal of the top cover where the display and webcam are located for an easy exchange, or use with a dock for Desktop applications.

Easier battery removal/exchange, such as allowing for a hot swappable battery. This would probably necessitate a different chassis as well.

Side pointing speakers rather than down firing ones.

Wider stereo field on the microphones that are built into the webcam module.

A different bottom peace on the bezzle, so if you close the lid of your laptop, airflow from the fans can escape out the back more easily and keep the system cooler.

Better grip on the feet that keep the chassis raised up, or even exchangeable feet for the chassis.

A no fingerprint sensor option for the input cover, a no webcam option for the top cover. Both of these could be configurable at purchase options.

A power input only expansion card for USB-C. There have been and can be some problems when power can go both ways, such as with power banks that can provide and receive a charge over a USB-C port.

Beeps for error codes, at least some of them, in addition to or replacement for the lights.

Not specifically for the full FW13 itself, but part of it: A framework built chassis for the Mainboard when you choose to upgrade the Mainboard and need a place for the old one. The Coolermaster one is nice, but has had and possibly does have its problems.

That’s all I can think of for now.

I’d like a more rugged plastic frame like the Framework 12 has. The most annoying thing about the Framework 13 is pinching of arm hair in the gap between the input deck and the case bottom. Plus the laptop feels kinda fragile and cold with all that aluminium.

Apart from that, an oled touch screen with a glass front like the dell XPS 13 had. That was a major downgrade when I switched to Framework.

  • 360-degree hinges (to use it on a stand with an external keyboard)
  • NFC reader

The FW12 doesn’t have a volume rocker in tablet mode, so maybe an expansion module for touch gestures and biometrics?

This thread is for Framework Laptop 13  but feel free to create a similar thread for 12.

An expansion card is an expansion card though, touch gestures would be a neat card.

Lots of overlap with my wishlist and other’s, but:

  • OLED or micro/mini LED. I want better contrast and less blurring.
  • LPCAMM. I want to get more out of my iGPU and to get better battery life.
  • Firmware vulnerability patches within X days of vulnerability disclosure. You choose X, I just want to know that I won’t be stuck with an unsupported device again. 90 days is pretty standard, but even 180 would be a nice improvement over no promises.
  • Building on the above, coreboot would be cool and might lessen the load on your devs if you can document it well and attract contributors from the community.
  • Thunderbolt 5. I want to squeeze more juice from my eGPU.
  • A backwards-compatible chassis with a kensington lock slot.
  • ARM mainboard. I’m happy with the new AMD 300 series for now, but I’d love for my next upgrade in 2-3 years to be ARM (or risc-v if it’s daily-driver ready, but I’m not so optimistic about that one yet). Mostly for battery but partly also for novelty, I just like tinkering and have never had an ARM laptop before.

  • OLED / mini/microLED (or whatever panel tech): 800nits+ brightness option, dE < 3, factory calibrated, 99%+ sRGB/DCI P3/AdobeRGB, brightness & gray uniformity > 90%, deeeeeep black.
  • Speakers with some meat / substance.
  • Keyboard: 7-row option. Home/End/PgUp/PgDown.
  • LPCAMM
  • Haptic touchpad option.
  • Rear exhaust (current design bounces the air flow noise to the front. You hear the noise difference as you turn the lid).
  • AKM DAC / audio build-in module option.
  • IR webcam option.
  • Screw-on bezel option / More solid lid option. (Less flex. e.g. Give me a 1.7kg 13.5 inch option that’s SOLID…I personally don’t mind the weight, up to a point, if it’s more solid. Solid like a Macbook Air)
  • BIOS: Start charging threshold.
  • Custom / personalised fan curve software for Windows and Linux (without having to go into the BIOS or self-built app).

Haptic touchpad all the way

I will update my screen once there is a HDR+“retina”+higher framerate option, so that’s in the back of my head. OLED is nice but not required, I’m more interested than the features than the implementation.

I’d love more than two ports on either side, especially because the back two aren’t as flexible as the front two. Either by actually having more expansion ports, or by having stuff like two USBC in one expansion card.

First, thank you so much for soliciting our feedback and I hope you are doing well. Second, I love my Framework 13 and really appreciate all of the effort and time you have put into designing it. Below are the things that I wish it had, ordered by priority from most important to least. I realize that everything listed may not be feasible, but in a perfect world I’d really appreciate the following:

  • Haptic touchpad
  • Higher quality display (OLED or Mini/Micro LED, with proper color calibration)
  • Coreboot support (or even just improved firmware support, which was my vote on the other thread)
  • LPCAMM RAM
  • Dual USB-C expansion card (I love being able to choose my port selection, but being restricted to 4 ports can be challenging)
  • Touch screen and a 360-degree hinge (I know the Framework 12 already fills this niche, but I would really like to take advantage of the higher-end hardware in the 13)
  • IR Webcam
  • Speakers that have higher audio fidelity

Is that even technically possible?

It feels weird to suggest things, when there’s a good chance my pre-ordered FW 12 will replace my FW 13 as my daily use machine. But hey, whatever.

When using the FW 13 as a “portable” machine, I use the touchpad. When I travel, I bring a mouse, just in case, but my primary control input is the touchpad. The current touchpad is…fine. But a haptic touchpad would take one of the primary interaction points with the laptop, and take it from “good enough” and make it just, actually good. I’d definitely love to see a haptic touchpad. Maybe, some day, even as an upgrade for the FW 12…

Obviously, I’d love to see far more efficient chips that provide similar or better performance with far better battery life, but that’s kind of on the chip makers to come up with something before Framework can decide to use it.
