Community Survey : Framework Laptop 13 New Features Thread

Haptic Trackpad is most important.

A new screen panel is meh, if it improves battery life maybe, but the original one is excellent.

However, a another style of bottom cover is something I am very interested in.

It could be a thicker model that allows a deeper keyboard. Maybe one that has a built in kickstand to raise/tilt the laptop on a table.

In a perfect world, a deeper model that allows for a deeper keyboard AND space for 2 batteries stacked in the case. (Not saying that last part is easy or simple). probably wont be a large volume product either but who knows.

New speakers would be neat, maybe a top cover that has water-resistant speaker holes would also be nice to have (im probably the only person who uses the speakers)

edit: i cant spell

Expose the USB interface internally on the motherboard, or more generally add some kind of method for interfacing hardware with the motherboard directly.

For me personally, in terms of modding and/or developing hardware for the laptop Electrical/Computer Engineering is my weakest point. I have much more experience on the mechanical engineering side both in terms of things like chassis design as well as things like running mod wires and repairing damage per JSTD-001.

A mod I have been interested in attempting for a while is installing a Lenovo X220 keyboard on the Framework 13. I’m not well versed enough on the electrical side to develop a way to interface it directly, but there are existing mods/boards that convert the keyboard to a USB keyboard. If there was a way to connect a device to USB internally I would be pretty confident I could develop a solution on the mechanical side to make it fit.

Alternately, as I mentioned in the beginning of this post if there is a more clever way of doing this that is more general, that would be fine too. Maybe always including a full set of “test points” for certain busses on the board that could be easily tied into?

Making an account to pile on the haptic touchpad train - I recently switched from FW13 to a macbook air and this is a major reason.

Made an account to express more support for different colored chassis/cases/etc like the fw12. Even just something like matte black/white would be great, since I feel like the aluminum attracts fingerprints and smudges waayyy too easily.

Always in favor of expansion cards w/ two USB-C ports, SD+microSD, etc. 4 port slots isn’t a lot, compared to a lot of other laptops, so I’d like to get the most out of those 4 slots if I can.

No strong feelings on the haptic touchpad but I’d LOVE a touchpad with physical buttons on the bottom. Clicking is deeply unsatisfying as-is.

OLED Screen and haptic touchpad for me. Those are killer features!

Looking at the screens Asus puts into its CES laptops made me very jealous. Glass-covered OLED is such an awesome screen option

I love my Framework…..but I’ve been using a Lenovo X1 Carbon and more recently, an X9 for work, both with haptic trackpads. It’s a massive QOL improvement that makes a laptop feel like it belongs in 2025. A glossy, high contrast OLED would be very nice, though I appreciate that Framework did make their own challenges with the quirky aspect ratio and problems sourcing panels.

I’d concentrate on making laptops that aren’t ewaste before they’ve even shipped before gimmicks.

Timely, functional BIOS updates that actually address the issues people are having.

Support that actually works, and doesn’t require repeating ourselves 20 times over. I’d gladly wait a day longer to get the same agent every time, instead of spending 5 days repeating myself to 5 different people, only serving to frustrate me and destroy the little faith I had in FW further.

The case that was promised to use an old battery as a powerbank.

larger 14-15’’ screen

having a 16 fw laptop, I feel there should be a middle ground option: smaller than 16, but larger than 13.

portable laptop, with not so small screen.

  1. Haptic track pad - After briefly trying a Mac Pro, no other track pad has ever felt the same. Having a consistent click over the entire surface – no dead corners – with a possibly customizable clean and simple click, with minimal flex would be incredible.
  2. Reliable 10 + hour battery life with median power consumption - Could be BIOS settings to downclock CPU or limit TDP or configure lower power parts
  3. Detailed power consumption of each part when configuring / purchasing
  4. Configurable for a light weight, < 1.0 kg - The option to configure for a very light laptop with a good battery life for non intensive tasks such as writing documents and light browsing
  5. Thunderbolt 5 - Not only certified, but also fully supported would be great.
  6. Aluminium body similar to Macbook Pro - A unibody like design, whilst keeping the expansion card support and repairability would be the tipping point for me and many of my friends. “If the Framework 13 had the build quality of a Mac while being just as repairable, then I would get one” - Trust me bro guarentee
  7. Magnetic charging - Whether in an expansion card or baked in as is the headphone jack, a magnetic charger similar to the MagSafe and other community adaptations, even better if it retains data transfer capabilities.
  8. Hot swapable battery
  9. LPCAMM2

I just want to be able to take my old screen out and replace with a touch screen and a simple way to use a stylus to sign documents. The 12-inch can fold all the way over for that, and I am not sure what you could do with the 13-inch for that option, perhaps making the touch pad be compatible with a stylus?

I work in human services and social and I am forever getting people to sign documents, and my clients struggle with e-signing (I have Adobe Sign) and paper = death.

If I had my time again, I would probably get a 1,2 but since I was an early adopter, that was not an option. Also, I find the 12-inch screen for me personally is a little small.
