Core Ultra Boot Weirdness

Hi all, I’ve had a strange problem on my new Core Ultra mainboard. When trying to boot any bootloader, the first time the laptop immediately powers off and restarts. Then, I have to go through and select that boot option again, and it will boot normally. This only happens exactly every other try booting something. It even happens with the UEFI sometimes: hitting f2 on boot will cause the laptop to restart, then hitting f2 on the second boot will bring up the UEFI.

I’ve never experienced this behavior from my previous mainboard (i5). The core ultra board is on the 3.04 firmware with updated retimers. What could be causing this?

For example, if my laptop is shut off and set to boot the grub entry automatically, it looks like:

  • press power button, lights up
  • Backlight turns on
  • Framework logo appears
  • Laptop shuts off, power button light turns off
  • Power button light turns on
  • Backlight turns on
  • Framework logo appears
  • GRUB appears

Thanks!

Edit: side note, why did Intel go back to the v3 instruction set on Core Ultra when 11th gen supported v4?

Sounds like a boot volume / EFI partition issue maybe? If you haven’t fix it yet, you may try the nuclear option of formatting your drive and reinstalling your OSes.

What settings do you have set in the BIOS? Maybe the Windows Installer.

I’ll play with the windows installer settings but it is OS independent so not a partition issue, if I remove my storage it’ll reboot itself to get to the no boot device screen.

Gotcha. Still sounds like something in the UFI firmware isn’t happy.
