I stumbled upon something fun recently: I used to own an ASUS ProArt Studiobook Pro 16 OLED (W5600), and its 4K OLED screen was hands-down the best I’ve ever used—unmatched color and brightness.
Back then, I bought two screen protectors. I just got a Framework 16, and out of curiosity, I tried the leftover one on it. To my surprise, the dimensions matched perfectly!
That got me thinking: Could Framework 16 support OLED panels in the future? Whether through official upgrades or community mods, I’d love to see it happen. Has anyone heard anything or tried a DIY swap?
Hm, what would we need again?
Pinout conversion, because OLEDs like to be different.
Voltage conversion, because magic smoke needs to stay inside.
I know little about the full details, and I hear the devil often hides in details.
OLED are able to be thinner. I’m wondering if there is a chance a custom adapter could fit behind the screen. I’ve never needed to look for thin inductors, but I fear they could be a roadblock, maybe a polyamide / kapton pcb section for thinness if needed.
I’m really just wondering how fessible it could be, and at what cost. Don’t have the time to attempt, but it sure would be sweet if an OLED option was available for a Framework. And with the 16, you could maybe stuff a prototype convertor board into an empty non-dGPU expansion bay.
Mainly that, appart from physically fitting of course.
There is quite a big chance it does but the 16 has so much space you may as well put it somewhere else.
It is possible it is one of those with integrated oled power supply, those tend to be thicker as they were intended for models that were designed for lcds, having the power conversion circuitry part of the laptop is definitely more efficient from an oem standpoint which is why they later pretty much universally moved to that but there was an in-between period where they used panels that were basically pin compatible with lcds.
The spec of that one look almost like what is probably in my fancy potable usb-c oled, having that in a laptop could almost justify carying a 16" to me XD.
I am glad I don’t have that but it is definitely important to have both options. In my case I can tolerate flicker pretty well, even flicker slow enough that I can see it in my peripheral vision.
I recently got a oled desktop monitor and it took some getting used to the contrast, while the peak brightness I set is actually somewhat lower than I had set on the old lcd going from a dark to a bright window still flashbangs harder XD.
