I was chatting with a friend recently, and we started talking about OLED screens for laptops—like his ASUS ExpertBook B9. This got me wondering about the possibilities of getting an OLED display for the Framework Laptop 16.
Besides the vibrant colors that OLED offers, it could also be great for battery life, especially for users like me who frequently use dark themes.
Do you think it’s possible to incorporate an OLED screen while maintaining the current slimness of the chassis?
Framework could certainly release an OLED screen. Maintaining the current slimness shouldn’t be an issue for them.
But for a DIY swap, it seems it would be challenging. There have been some threads with talk about the possibility, should come up if you just search “OLED”. Iirc the issues are that OLEDs usually use a different voltage to drive the display, so you need a voltage convertor. And I believe most, if not all, current OLEDs displays use different pinouts, so you need an adapter for that as well. Though due to the different voltage, you couldn’t have plugged it straight in anyway. I don’t think anyone has yet seen a way to fit this all in with the existing lid / display cover. And if I recall the current Framework CAD model isn’t detailed enough / complete enough to just use to make a new lid with more room. Things like magnet locations aren’t there.
