My batch 3 framework 12 arrived yesterday. On initial boot, all went well and was able to boot into an install ISO. However, on the third or forth boot, a screen appeared before my bootloader stating that “Issues with system installation found: \ - CPU Fan not present”. If I skip the screen, the fan does work so I am not sure what to do or how to debug the issue further. I couldn’t find an option in the BIOS to disable this check.
I briefly looked through other posts and I say someone mentioned that they had a similar issue before they upgraded their firmware to 3.0.4, but my device already came with that pre-installed.
I am having this issue. If I re-install firmware 3.0.4 the alert does not appear until the machine is shut down (and presumably the ec resets). I have a ticket open with Support.
Batch 1 user here. Framework Support has confirmed to me today that this is a known issue:
We have confirmed that this is a known issue.. At this time, there is no need to perform any troubleshooting steps, as our we actively working on a software solution. We will provide an update as soon as the fix becomes available.
The fan detection error is only shown when the firmware option [Advanced] > [Boot performance mode] is set to “Max battery”. If you change it to “Max battery”, the detection error only shows up after EC reset (approx. 15 seconds after power off). Vice versa. Setting it to either of the two remaining options mitigates the issue.
I’ve been in contact with Framework support in the past month. I’ve even gone through the process of “switching it off and on again”, exchanging components, and even replacing the main board. None of these measures work, as it’s fundamentally not a hardware issue.
PS: unfortunately I upgraded the firmware on first boot so I don’t know whether firmware version 3.0.4 introduces the issue or not.
I had it occur on the prior firmware so I don’t believe that the new firmware introduced the issue. I have mine set to max battery, and I can confirm that after applying the bios update the issue does not recur until an EC reset. Thanks for this post, that’s good to know and likely saved me from opening another ticket when my replacement machine shows up. It is being replaced due to a crack on the bottom chassis.
This seems to still be present in batch 6 and current firmware. The weird thing is it didn’t start happening on my initial tinkering with the BIOS settings.
Returning the BIOS to defaults to clear the MAX Battery setting made the fan not present error go away.
Batch 6 Bubblegum. Having the same issue on my end, can confirm that switching off of Max Battery and powering off for 15 sec~ will remove the POST warning.
This helped me temporarily, perhaps I turned it off in some “funny” way. I’ve decided to use the middle option for fans, and turned my laptop off for about 15 seconds, and when I turned it on, the warning was gone, however, the next day it returned. (I’ve simply turned off my laptop, and let it sit there overnight)
Hopefully this will be a simple software fix for the FAN detection algorithm
It’s not like this problem makes the laptop unusable, but it is a tiny bit annoying, since it makes the startup a bit longer and manual.
Also hitting on this issue today.
Tried to change some settings to see if it would help the display flickering (it doesn’t) and now at every boot I get this issue.
Restoring BIOS to default values will not fix the issue, you are going to be stuck with it.
I started getting this issue too after getting my 12 this morning. For the first few boots there wasn’t any issues but then it started happening. However, I know for sure it’s working when needed. If it’s just a bugged warning I don’t really mind until we get another BIOS update but if it’s more serious for the long term should we (others and I) continue to send support tickets?
I too have this issue. I wanted more battery life while using windows 11 so I changed to max battery in bios. I still have the issue after updating bios to 3.05.
Batch 11 user who just got his computer today! Had 3.04 BIOS pre-installed. First thing I did was examine all the BIOS settings, and one of the settings I changed was the MAX BATTERY setting. First few boots were ok, then after a few hours of fun and a few hours of it powered it off, I turned it on again and got hit by this exact same problem. I switched the MAX BATTERY to the 3rd option (TURBO something? - does anyone know what the original setting was?), waited 15 seconds, and it is now booting normally again.
Batch 3 user (BIOS updated to 03.04) here with the same problem. However, I prefer the max battery setting and I am waiting for a fix instead of switching to one of the others…
Just FYI to link to the other thread in case somebody has the same motivation for a firmware upgrade and ends up with the same problem but finds this first…
I just got my framework 12 today and I have the latest Bios version as far as I know, but I’m having this CPU fan not found error every time I turn on the machine, I know the fan is working but it’s very annoying.
I think I should have waited at least 6 more months to get the laptop to allow them to iron this things out.
