The laptops have 4-6 extension card bays. The new 16er laptop with the graphics module have an additional usb port on the back. I could use 7 interfaces.
In the last 10 years, I never used more than 1 usb-c for power, 1 hdmi, occasionaly 1 usb-a for things. With video over usb-c my need drops to 2 interfaces.
It would be nice to have colored dummy modules, light and cheap.
IMHO that’s what the USB-C excard is for, cheap and stilo useful 
You can already 3D print yourself (or buy) essentially blank plastic cards in any color you want! I will say that the USB-C cards, as @TheLPeink says, which do come in colors now, the more useful storage expansion cards that are smooth on the outside, or for cheaper, my SNACK drawers, fill that niche plenty well while profiding some utility.
