External fingerprint reader solution when laptop is closed with external monitor

Hi Framework community,

I have a Framework Laptop 13" running Ubuntu 26.04 with an integrated fingerprint sensor. When I connect it to my external monitor (Philips 49M2C8900L ultrawide) and close the laptop lid, the fingerprint sensor becomes unavailable.

I’m looking for solutions to use fingerprint authentication when the laptop is closed:

  1. Is there a way to use the fingerprint reader externally (e.g., via USB extension or external reader)?
  2. Has anyone successfully configured an external USB fingerprint reader (like DigitalPersona U.ARE.U 4500 or similar) to work with the Framework’s fingerprint authentication on Ubuntu?
  3. Any other workarounds you’d recommend for this scenario?

I’m considering:

  • Using an external USB fingerprint reader (DigitalPersona U.ARE.U 4500)
  • YubiKey for secondary authentication
  • Or accepting password-based login when the laptop is closed

Any suggestions or experiences you can share would be greatly appreciated!

PS a workaround is to stop fingerprint service when lid is cloded as in Only enable fingerprint authentication when lid is open - #7 by andypiper
