Windows 11, with dGPU which does switch when gaming.
Besides from some other issues that I have had with this Laptop, one of the painful ones is an over heating laptop. So hot that when the gf went to use it to play games with me, it ended up burning her legs. This laptop has an unbelievable heating issue that it burns just to use the keyboard and mouse all over. Usually I can tolerate a bit of heat compared to most but holy this is hot. Recently I noticed I had 0 on the fan rpm which is a little concerning.
So far the only pro I have for this laptop is the fact I can swap the expansion memories and stuff, but even one of those have major issues too.
Anyways my main concern is the heat. Any suggestions?
I had a lot of slowdown and heat problems in Windows 10, but about the same time I went to '11 I noticed that the nvme heat spreader under the midplate had its tape still on it. Slowdowns and crazy fan went away after removing that… and upgrading to Windows 11. Still might be worth checking, my thermal pad was grey with a blue removable film.
(it still doesn’t like when you have a blanket or pillow or something that can block vents though)
Don’t play games on it. That’s my suggestion. I played games on mine in my lap with shorts on once and got a second degree burn on my leg as well…Learned my lesson. There are plenty of lap tables you can get that will shield a naked leg from the heat of the laptop.
It’s a relatively thin laptop with a high end cpu and gpu in it. The heat has to go somewhere. I’d rather have it get to the outside of the laptop instead of stuck inside somewhere.
Are you on the latest firmware? I don’t have a FW16 but the 13 inch models had a firmware bug that caused temperature sensors to sometimes read as an error which caused the fan to go to 0 rpm which naturally would cause the laptop to get hot enough to literally burn you: [RESPONDED] FW 13 7840U ACPI thermal readout problem
If you’re on Linux, the next time your fan is at 0 rpm I’d run the following command:
