F16 colors not as rich as F13

The colors on the Framework 16 are a little washed out. They aren’t as vibrant as my Framework 13s. I find the 16" display to be unpleasant to look at. What are the 16" PWM parameters and how do they compare to the 13"? I requested a refund since I’m within the 30-day return period. If I was using it as a desktop replacement driving an external monitor, I’d keep it. Using it as a laptop, I can’t stand it. If I could replace the display with something better, I’d keep it.

Have you tried increasing the saturation?

AMD’s Graphics Software, Adrenalin, has an option to change the display settings, including brightness, contrast, hue, color temperature, and saturation (you’d likely want to adjust that last option). Also note, the image may change quality when it toggles between the iGPU and the dGPU, if you have the dGPU installed.

My FW16 didn’t come with AMD Adrenalin preinstalled in Windows, but it’s readily available on AMD’s website. I would recommend going with last month’s release (24.8.1) instead of the one that released on October 1st (24.9.1) as a handful of people (including myself) have had major issues with the latest release.

Framework will also recommend and encourage you to stick with the driver version they have provided, so if you want to find a download link to the… April release(?), it shouldn’t overwrite/update over the Framework provided driver, but will give you access to Adrenalin.

What the colours look like is a personnel preference.
I found that installing the ICC colour profile from the windows drivers helped.
My personnel preference is for the colours on the screen to look the same as they would in real life. So, for example, if I take a picture of someone’s face, and show it on the screen, I want it to be no redder/darker or lighter than the real life face.
For me the colour tones were off, until I installed the ICC profile. Linux wayland gnome is a bit broken in its handling of ICC profiles, so takes a bit of fiddling to make sure the ICC is actually applied.

Thanks. Here’s what happens taking the default, which today installed 24.9.1

The version of AMD Software that you have launched is not compatible with your currently installed AMD graphics driver.

For information on how to resolve this, please go to https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/pa-300

Take the link, run the tool, get this:

The version of AMD Software installed is already a compatible version. Please check if the AMD Display Driver is working correctly.

I uninstalled and rebooted.

I searched for AMD Adrenalin 24.8.1 and found this: AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 24.8.1 Release Notes

AMD Adrenalin | Display showed Protonopia was set to 10%. That explains why the reds were a little lackluster.

Thanks.

I had to look up ICC. I am running Windows 11. I’m questioning the relevance of ICC. The problem isn’t limited to content I view. The Windows dialog boxes and menus themselves looked washed out.

AMD Adrenalin should automatically be installed with the Framework Driver install tool. Try downloading that and running it. If you want a clean graphics driver and software reinstall I would recommend using Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU).

AMD and Framework seem to have some custom integrations into that version that the official app and drivers from AMD do not support causing multiple crash reports from other users trying to update their graphics drivers.

In Radeon software check if Varibright is turned on. If so try turning it down or off to see if this is the cause.

Thanks.

DDU is another item to lookup. Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) download version 18.0.8.1

I cannot recommend this product. The download page is full of green buttons to try to sell you something. After installing, once you run the product, it tells you that you don’t have the latest version. It asks you to go to the product web page where there are more sales attempts. You have to click multiple checkboxes to opt-out when you run the product.

DDU recommends rebooting in Safe Mode. I have BitLocker enabled, which apparently is the default. I do not remember specifying BitLocker during the install of Windows 11 Pro. Windows says rebooting in Safe Mode requires a BitLocker recovery key or password. I used DDU without Safe Mode. Is DDU necessary or do people use it because of fear?

DDU is necessary because it purges all the “old” drivers and vendor software. Windows will likely choose the newer faulty driver when you try to install the correct driver using the Framework Driver Installer. The only way to fix this is to remove all the old Graphics drivers. While you could do this manually, DDU helps do this automatically as well as remove any software related to the GPU.

If you want to turn off bitlocker, you can search encryption settings and click turn off encryption. It may take some time to decrypt the drive, but that will disable bitlocker. It is recommended to use Safe Mode, but it isn’t 100% necessary.

  1. Uninstalled every app that began with AMD in the name.
  2. Rebooted.
  3. Ran DDU not using Safe Mode. Selected Options. Unchecked Show offers from our partners. Checked Remove AMD Audio Bus. Selected Device Type GPU. Selected Clean and restart.
  4. Rebooted.
  5. Installed Framework drivers bundle.
  6. Rebooted.

I see the following software installed:

  1. AMD Chipset Software 5.06.29.310
  2. AMD Software, no version number, 16.0 KB
  3. AMD Software 23.40.18.02 99.6 MB this is Adrenalin, which I didn’t know I had

Adrenalin is clearly biased toward gaming, which does not interest me at all.

In Windows 11, I searched for AMD and found AMD Software. Selecting this starts Adrenalin. Navigated to Gaming | Display

  1. Turned off Vari-Bright
  2. Display Color Enhancement made things worse, so it was returned to the default of Disabled.
  3. Enabled Custom Color.

Changed color temperature and hue. It’s better. Changing the Windows theme to dark also helped. I still find the display annoying. Does it use PWM? I’m wondering if PWM is bothering me.

According to the review from Notebookcheck, there was no PWM detected on the Framework 16’s display. You can find some more details if you look up the Framework 16 review from them.

Thanks for the reference about PWM.
