Fan running continuously

I ordered a fw12 for my wife that we received yesterday. I installed win11 on it and everything seems to be working well and she’s happy with it.

The only thing that I’m noticing, is that the fan is running more or less continuously, and often pretty fast. The OS is set to balanced power mode.

My fw13 with an 7840U running Linux only has its fan running when I’m doing intensive tasks.

Is this expected on the fw12?

FL12 has plastic surfaces, which have less passive cooling. Older “classic” laptops (IBM Thinkpads before Lenovo) all have idle fan RPM.

I find that when doing light tasks, the fan will often still run, though slow enough that I have to lean my head down close to be able to hear it. But it does ramp up occasionally, depending on what I’m doing. I imagine this is due not only to the plastic chassis (which holds in heat a bit), but also the design with minimal venting. It’s a double-edged sword. I love that there aren’t a ton of vents to pull in dust and which will end up blocked depending on the surface the laptop is sitting on. But this also means that there is very little passive cooling going on.

It’s probably better for the fan too, not starting and stopping all the time.
