FW12 fan behaviour

Hello all you FW12 users!

I just wanted to know how you find the FW12, especially in terms of fan behaviour.

I like the machine and find it to be a fun little device that I use for everything (mostly university work, as industrial engineering and management). However, I find the fans annoying at times. Even when I only have an Edge tab and for example GoodNotes open, the fans run quite a lot and are very audible.

Is this normal, and is there anything I can change in the settings? I’m using Windows 11 on my FW12 i5 version.

I would like to know how your experience is in this regard.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Lukas

This is normal. While you might not think you are doing much, Windows ensures you are. The best thing to do to keep temps down, and thus leave your fans not so active, is to ensure you have your performance settings set to power saver or all the way left on the power gauge. When you plug your device in and let it work on battery are two different scenarios, so just know that if you set the power setting while on AC it might be the setting used when you are on batter. Best to to check in both situations.

If that doesn’t quiet things down enough for you, then you need to start being a task manager hunter. You would look in tax manager what processors are taxes the CPU the most and decide if you need them running. If you don’t adjust accordingly. (Close the program, etc.)

Beyond this kind of thing requires modifying Windows, and are outside of what I would suggest doing. Hopefully this helps though.

Hi thx for the fast answer.

with power settings your are referring to the following (see screenshot attached in german), right?

or are the any other menus I can tweak a bit?

Ja genau!

In Windows 11, this is how they would like you to change this setting. Try it like this and see if it makes a difference.

perfect, thx.

I will try and play a bit around to see if it makes the desired difference.

Is there any control software (from FW or something else) which can be used in Windows 11 to control the fans a bit.

Hello,
as far as I know, no—and I haven’t found anything in the BIOS either, though I could be mistaken. Support also told me that this feature doesn’t exist.

What I have noticed with mine, though, is that it sometimes struggles with VPNs. Also, if you run virus scans with Windows or other programs, you should check whether the issue happens at those times.

Additionally, it doesn’t seem to like programs like OneNote very much, since you can load huge amounts of data into it, and it syncs everything at regular intervals, which can also cause noticeable noise.

Another thing I’ve noticed is that when it’s charging, it starts to get louder, almost as if the charging controller is overheating and needs to be cooled down.

It would be interesting to see if others experience the same thing and in which situations they notice it happening.
