I was playing a steam game yesterday and my computer started getting really hot. I noticed that my fan hadn’t been running. Not sure when exactly it stopped. I’ve tried rebooting and using ectool to set the fan speed. The fans stay at 0. Running s-tui reports the fans staying at 0.

I took off the keyboard cover and checked that the fan is plugged in and that it spins freely. It seems like everything is connected and unblocked.

Is there a way to reset the fan or restart it? Is this a dead fan?

I just went through a similar experience, and discovered the fan is set to come on between 45-50 Deg. C. Can you measure the temp of your system? Is it up there where the fan should turn on? Do you have a DMM with very fine tip, needle like probes? If so you could try measuring the voltage at the fan connector. Caution the connector has very fine pitch pins, easy to slip and let out the sparks.

Thanks Rod. I was able to push it to > 50 C without the fans kicking on. I don’t have a DMM, so can’t check that, but based on the temps, I think this is ultimately my problem. I appreciate the help.

From what I know I would agree with you. I’d get a hold of support and work though the problem with them. That’s what I did. worked out well*. Fan control is a bit of a black hole of info. It involves the kernel, Bios, and a little BfM (Black f* Magic).

*Got my first contact from support 24 hours after initial problem report. Within 2 days we had a couple of back and forths and resolved the problem. I discovered the fan-on threshold on my own accord, and support confirmed my analysis as being how things work.

GL let us know how things work out for you.

I got in contact with Support. They helped me out. They had me reset the BIOS settings which ended up being the issue. So some BIOS setting got set during an update or something because I hadn’t changed any settings. Regardless, my fan is now working.
Thanes for the help, Rod.
For the future reader, try opening the bios (F10 on startup) and reset to the defaults (F9) and see if that helps you.

Hey, hey, great news. nice to hear you’re all fixed up. Happy to have been some help.

Interesting turn of events how some BIOS setting can be affected. Good tip on resetting the BIOS, I’ll keep that in mind for the future.
