First Framework 16 Purchase

Hello

Im looking to purchase a framework laptop in australia but i have a few questions before i hit buy:

  • Can it be charged by a dock and what dock would be recommended for both charging and display output ?

  • I usually run my laptops with the lid down id like to do the same with my new one, are the vents mainly on the side ?

  • What are the estimated shipping times to australia ?

  • Can i purchase an extra bezel and screen in case of a lid related issue ?

ships within 5 days usually, sometimes takes a bit longer for Australia.

you can purchase the extra items from the marketplace, but not as a part of the laptop purchase.

Yes, it can be charged by a dock. There are plenty around, and plenty of discussions here in the forums. That being said, there are no docks yet that can deliver more than around 100W to the FW16. For heavy use with the dedicated graphics, that is not enough. Without that, it’s all I need. I’ve got Dell WD19DCS (bought used).

The exit vents are to the sides for the CPU and to the rear for the graphics card, air intakes mainly from the bottom. I don’t have the graphics card, though. And have never gotten around to understanding why people buy an expensive big notebook screen to then not use it.

Although if you select to purchase the laptop with the graphics module then the laptop is hungry for more power than any currently available dock can provide (which will result in reduced performance and/or the battery draining while under load but plugged into the dock). A couple docks (mainly Thunderbolt 5 docks) can deliver 140w using non-proprietary protocols, but afaik none yet can deliver 180w (what Framework recommends, although under full load still requires the battery to supplement to reach full performance, 240w is needed for full performance without the battery supplementing).

Any dock using USB4 40 Gbps or Thunderbolt 4 should work excellently (as the laptop supports the features that are optional in USB4 but required for Thunderbolt 4), as should docks using standards that the laptop is backwards compatible with such as Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C DP Alt Mode. You can also connect newer docks that use faster standards like USB4 80 Gbps/Thunderbolt 5, although they will be limited to the capabilities of the laptop (ie. 40 Gbps bandwidth).

Of course that is in theory. In practice there are sometimes compatibility bugs between specific laptops and specific docks, so it is always a good idea to use this forum’s search feature to see what other people are saying about any dock model that you’re considering.

The air intakes are on the bottom and top. Using it with the lid down will reduce the air available to the top intakes, although it should still have access to plenty through the bottom. I’d expect it to run a bit warmer, slower, and/or louder with the lid closed, but not dramatically slow.

The air exhaust for the CPU cooling is on the sides. If you select the graphics module then that adds additional exhaust along the back. Regardless this isn’t impacted by the lid position.

Those are available on the Framework marketplace.
