Fixing my loud fans

so i 3d printed and built a very stupid solution to keeping my laptop quiet while at my desk. i originally was going to use a soundproof chamber, but it was going to be extremely bulky, a pain in the neck, and more janky than i have the ability to mitigate.

so instead i just use bigger high static pressure fans to push air through the laptop and it runs a little cooler, but immensely quieter.

here’s a video

someone on reddit let me know this already exists as a product: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Io0OmihHPu4

egg on my face, but i mean, it was kind fun.

Haha, that’s even the same one I’ve been using (the V12 RGB, at least). It does help quite a bit with cooling, but can get pretty loud at higher RPMs (as is to be expected).

That said, I still like the “homemade” approach to the problem! That kind of creativity is one thing I really appreciate here!

hey thanks! doin my best!

Curious to know what spec your laptop is?

Also if it using liquid metal or PTM 7958.

I’m planning on getting one and the maxed out noise level does sound a bit concerning.

I find it fitting that a Zephyrus G14 would be featured in such an ad.

Anyway, great build.

Personally I went and bought an off-brand cooling pad, noted that it didn’t do anything, removed the top metal grid to expose the fan and used insulating foam to seal the edges and only then it actually started having an effect, but it wasn’t nearly as good as in your case.

Here you seem to be genuinely producing more pressure than the built-in fans, which is awesome.

Cool idea…also, “how to turn your laptop into a desktop”.

I have one of those llano coolers and I bought it specifically with the goal of making the laptop quieter… it did not. It was so much louder. I wonder what’s different.

I suspect you’d like your DIY solution more than the productized version.

it’s gen 2 ryzen 9 and nvidia 5070. gen 2 uses honeywell

its loud, but its pulling a huge amount of power. you’d struggle to find quiter desktop replacements

i turn the laptop fan speed down, trusting that the bigger fans will keep it cool! which they do!

my goal was not cooler, it was quieter.

Hmm, I didn’t try manually adjusting the laptop’s fans. My goal was also quieter as my temps are already good. Perhaps I should’ve done more testing.

just play around with fan curves + cooling pad power until the sound noise is where you need while your temps are fine for you
