Framework 13 AMD AI 300 randomly freezing / random ports disconnect

Like the topic says, my Framework 13 laptop is trash.

I’ve been trying hard to love it, first installed Xubuntu 25.10, then plain Ubuntu 25.10 (“officially supported”), upgraded to 26.04 and finally Linux Mint 22.3. On the first 2 I had to install kernel 6.17 to have WiFi working decently. So much for an “officially supported” laptop.

I had same issues with all of the distros: random freezes and ports disappearing randomly. Reboot needed to get them back.

BIOS is up to date. Distro likewise. No specific kernel message at every freeze, just freezes completely. As for the ports.

At this point I don’t even want to try anymore, that machine got me too frustrated. I just want a refund, and never hear again about overpriced Framework laptops.

Cheers

Hi, if you’re interested, I can recommend something to try. It might be something easily resolvable

I’m all ears

Have you reported the problems before now?
Here you will find mostly other users, like you.
There are now quite a few fixes for the problems you mention, but to help with which ones, we need a little more info.

  1. what devices do you have connected to which ports. Their make and model.
  2. what RAM, make and model.
  3. what SSD / NVME make and model.

Some of the fixes are

  1. upgrade firmware on the SSD, some older firmware causes ramdom freezes and reboots.
  2. some usb4 / thunderbolt devices cause freezes and reboots, and sometimes just replacing the cable with a better one solves the problem.
  3. setting kernel parameters “pcie_ports=native pcie_ecrc=on” can help it tell you which the problem device is.
  4. disabling panel self refresh. Some users find it is still a buggy part of software. Note, this problem is present on all AMD laptops, not just FW ones.

You might have all, some or none of the above, but providing more details of your problem and your hardware details always helps

i got a new Framework 13 with AMD AI 300 in January this year. I over read that Framework recommends Fedora & Ubuntu. I am quite new to Linux, made all experiences with Mint. So i started with Mint on the Framework an ran very fast into freezing issues. I went back to kernel 6.11 under Mint 22.2. and only had issues loosing the wifi connection seldomly. Two week ago i updated to Kernel 6.14 and Mint 22.3. without any issues until today.
