Framework 13 bent on bottom during assembly

Hello Framework Community,

last week I got my new Framework 13 in its DYI edition. But something is wrong with it. Assembly went smooth until the step were I had to attach the bezel. I had trouble getting it right and still it doesn’t really fit. When turned around, I noticed some damage on the back, it seems like small bends in chassi. I’m not sure if they where there before or due to my actions. I tried to be careful, only slowly closing the lid and stopping when there was some resistance. I have to admit that I didn’t read the instructions carefully enough and didn’t lay the notebook completly flat the first time.

When I though everything was fit correctly, I tried to tight down all the screws. Most of the fit, expect the on in the upper right, I noticed a small gap that wouldn’t close. I didn’t try to tighten the screw more than I though, to prevent any damage.

I removed the bezel and just tried if that made it better - and it sure did. The screw closed as expected. I noticed than that the bezel is made up of two compenents, the large frame and the smaller cover over the hinge. It seems that they detached at the left side, probably bent out of shape due to my actions. Two of the clips seemed have slipped out and I can’t get the last one to attach properly again.

(A note/suggestion on that: I think the video could be better. 4 seconds is really short and the step was clearly execute by someone who did it probably a hundred times. I think it would better to show some details first, like how the cables should run, especially in the upper left as they are thicker than the ones on the right. And to lay the notebook flat down, even just to prevent mistakes)

From functiality it seems fine, it booted Linux Mint without a hitch. The dreadful GPU performance during a quick test I expect to get better with a newer kernel and/or MESA Version, as the GPU in the Ryzen AI-something processor is fairly new.

I wanted to ask here first before I contact customer support, if there is something that can be done first.

That’s definitely a question for support. Glad everything’s working.

I wish Framework made it possible to comment on each step … Like, I found out the hard way that, if you pull straight back on the speaker cable, there’s a chance it’ll release suddenly and you risk damaging the other connector. You want to pull more up than straight back. I got lucky and only slightly damaged it.
