It’s not a replacement of the standard keyboard but if you take it out the 3D print + pcb does fit in there. Of course you cannot close the laptop while it’s there.
Thank you for creating this thread! As a note for someone, this project was originally posted as “Poor mans ortho” on Framework’s subreddit.
I think this thread is more suitable for the Creators & Developers category without choosing the sub category. Because there is no “Keyboard” sub category under the Creators & Developers category. Moderators, what do you think about changing the current category?
I think this project’s revolutionary point is that there is much space to implement split keyboard by giving up closing the laptop with the keyboard together. I commented it here before. I think this photo of the project explains the point well.
Thanks for your comment! That this is even possible with the framework laptop is the reason why I bought it. Ever since switching to a ortholinear keyboards I really haven’t been able to use an ordinary keyboard anymore.
So obviously this is not optimal since you can’t close the lid, but I’m also hoping that this could start a discussion on what is possible on in terms of the space given for another layout on the framework laptop. And maybe we will have an option to buy a split layout sometime in the future directly from the store here.
I do wanna experiment with the ultra low profile switches from Kaihl as well, but I don’t think I could get it flat enough to be able to close the lid. I think there is something like 3.4 mm of space.
@Per_Sommer I changed this thread’s category to “Creators & Developers” with the tag project by myself, as I just became the “Regular” role (Trust level 3) on Discourse (this forum system), which can edit the category and title on the threads. I also renamed the “Created an ortholinear keyboard” into your GitHub project name, “Framework 16 Keyboard v1 (Poor man’s Ortho) - Ortholinear split keyboard for Framework 16”. I hope you like it. If you don’t like it, feel free to rename it again. Thanks!
I saw people like you who wish for an ortholiner and/or split keyboards on this forum. I think this project would inspire people to start a discussion on what is possible.
There is a project trying to use the ultra low profile switches to Framework Laptop 13 here. You may be interested in seeing the project.
I think I would prefer if it could have a more direct connection via the input module pins (which are effectively just USB 2). Bluetooth would be a good alternative, though.
How much effort is it to remove the keyboard every time you close the laptop? Do you have to remove the touchpad module in order to release it, just like you need to do with the official keyboard module?
It’s not that much of an effort, but you do need to put the 3D printed pieces somewhere and put the keyboard back in the travel case. So if you do it a lot I guess it can become annoying. The reason why I put up with it myself is because I can’t type on a non-ortholinear keyboard anymore, so for now I don’t have any alternative.
