I’ve been using my Framework 16 for three months so far, and recently my laptop has been making a loud noise, like a barber’s hair trimmer, coming from the left fan.
1st Issue:
The screw in the picture is stripped, and I can’t get it out. I’ve tried using duct tape and pliers, but to no avail. I was wondering if anybody has any tricks or recommendations for specific tools I could buy to extract it.
The fans are making loud noises. I was gonna pull the left fan out but I can’t really get to them without resolving the first issue. I was also wondering if anybody knows from the sound what might be wrong with the fan in the first place.
That fan noise just sounds like some debris in the fan.
Once you get the screw fixed, and expansion bay out. After a good clean of the fan it should be ok.
If you have only had the unit for 3 months, it will be covered by FW support. Contact them via their web form.
It is a shame the glue trick has not worked on the screw.
There are specially design tools you can get to help get screws out, but I would try FW support first.
Possible tools look like this:
That is probably the wrong size, but the picture gives a general idea of what the end of the tool looks like. Note the special pliers also sometimes do not work, particularly for cases like this there the height of the head is so shallow, so there is not much of a head edge to work with, and also various obstructions near by.
There are screw extractors at hardware stores but none of them are probably small enough to get a bite on the offending screw.
Having taken apart my own Framework devices; some of the screws were tightened by someone who never missed Arm day at the gym.
If there is any lip available on the head of the screw, a quality pair of locking pliers might be enough to crush the head a little to get a grip and carefully try to liberate it from the hole.
Not a lot of clearance in this area and most locking pliers are obviously made for larger tasks.
