This exactly. Anybody know any other good options with a dGPU?
not even that, I would have appreciate to know where the tpm pads from the form is? I get shipping stuff happens but now it just looks like they forgot ![]()
Loving the fact that Framework now ships an option with their logo on the Meta key instead of a windows symbol or the word “super”. That is quite neat.
Love the little keyboard modules. That’s an exciting idea. I’d love to get a module to make the keyboard a tenkeyless.
I am sad we don’t have confirmation one way or the other on pen pressure support on the 12 inch. Still an exciting product though
All together, though there were some disapointments with the desktop personally I think this was a great event. Excited for the future
Haven’t seen that last part anywhere (can’t watch the live stream), is that really correct?
Also, would love the Wifi 7 module for my 7840U Framework 13, hope it’s a drop-in replacement.
Edit: ArsTechnica is reporting that the 12" chassis uses different motherboards. Framework Laptop 12 is a cheaper, more colorful take on a repairable laptop PC - Ars Technica
that does seem correct
Hm, I’m not sure how I should feel about this event.
Framework built an eco system around Laptop 13 and Laptop 16 and left it with untapped potential.
Now we have Desktop and Laptop 12.
I really wonder what prevented Framework from turning a Framework 13 into a 2-in-1 convertible or a Gaming Handheld?
Or reuse Laptop 16 mainboards as the base for a Desktop form factor?
Now I really feel weird about this and I’m not sure where to invest.
It’s ironic and funny that one of the presenters said good hardware is nothing without good software (paraphrased). Someone should have yelled “and nothing without good firmware too!”
It would have gotten a standing ovation.
It was my immediate and reflexive thought, ngl…
I’ve watched Linus video and the mainboards are definitely incompatible, the Framework 12 mainboard for example use pogo pins to connect to the keyboard instead of the flat band cable the Framework 13 uses.
I really would’ve preferred if these used the same mainboard formfactor.
You’re right! I could’ve sworn they’d said the motherboards were the same, but clearly that doesn’t seem to be the case. Such a missed opportunity then …
it might be me being a bit bias as a 16 owner but it doesn’t feel great that it feels like all the nice (customizable) stuff goes to the 13 (bezels) then 12 (colors) and the desktop (tiles) and finally the 16 (nothing new)
The article says the size is 12.2-inch. And I want to know the weight and size (width x height x depth) with both cm and inch. I am not a student. But I am interested in Framework Laptop 12.
Is the plan to discontinue FW16?
hopefully not, but it does seem like framework might be doing what pebble did (continue expanding and forgetting about the existing products)
You know, I just realized the Chromebook variant is a bit long in the tooth now given it is also using 12th gen Intel. Would’ve been killer to announce a touchscreen Chromebook convertible instead of the model that they have announced, no? I’m not even a Chromebook guy but that makes more sense than creating more technical debt and more bespoke/unique chassis lines I think.
I’ll be honest. I don’t blame framework for no new motherboard for the 16. I blame AMD for making their cpu so “AI” focused and not supporting expandable memory. I would happily buy a no NPU version/without fsr chip. as for the gpu there is no new mobile gpu to add
oh right the chromebook is a thing. It would have fit better since many chromebooks are touchscreen.
Has anyone managed to actually order anything?
I had to get back to work before the end of the stream. Upon reloading the Framework store it says I am in a queue and was waiting about 80 minutes to get in. I thought you could temporarily assign more resources to a website for just such a thing. Maybe I am giving web sites too much credit.
It isn’t a product that needs yearly refreshes, much like the steam deck. It does however deserve some mention once and while to remind people it exists. It launched in Sept of 2022, so going on 3 years (closer to 2 years currently). Framework hasn’t historically had multiple announcements in one year so…next year for the earliest update? 4-5 years is what I would expect the upgrade cycle to be unless they expect customers to truly use up the whole 10 years of firmware updates before upgrading lol.
