Framework (2nd Gen) Event is live on February 25th

Ryzen AI 300 Series + Ryzen AI 300 Max Series Mainboards? would be cool to go finally the next AMD step.

Well, my take is this. They say ‘second generation’ so it will be a new FL16 processor, and possibly a new GPU. I like the suggestion noted above about Nvidia making an announcement on the same day, but if they are allowing FW to put their chips in a laptop, that will be a significant change of attitude on Nvidias part from previous thinking.

I also like the idea of foldback hinges for the FL13, but the FL13 has had a number of ‘generations’, so I don’t think an FL13 as such will be classed as ‘second generation’. And surely a unit with foldback hinges will surely be classed as a ‘first generation’ due to other significant changes that would be required, even if it uses an existing FL13 motherboard. But maybe there will be a totally new motherboard that will be more compact and allow more than one NVMe drive?

Another possibility would be a for FW to make their own dock. This may be able to take the existing modules and handle 240W power for an FL16. This could be the meaning of the lightning symbol.

Maybe they will also have a kit to use existing FL13 or FL16 screens as seperate display units - maybe with a dock built in?

How about a different trackpad for the FL16 with proper buttons, maybe a full width so it doesn’t need spacers? That could well be part of a second generation FL16 announcement. Maybe with a full width trackpad there would be at least two versions, centered, trackpad to the left, maybe one to the right as well.

also true. My though was just, that good software support is always a worthy goal for a quality-oriented tech company, due to indirect revenue (through growing sales : better reviews, happier customers, especially happier business customers + less money spent for returns and repair tickets for problems which are based on software problems), but the costs just might not be economically feasible at a small scale.

OK, I wanna try guessing too.

  1. colors + yoga, something with 360 ° hinges, my second guess would be a mobile screen (flexible, because your choice of workplace bevomes more flexible)
  2. an expansion for the FW16 that is just a huge battery pack. Or a better faster charger. or a better internal battery. or you can now have a lid that hat photovoltaic integrated and charges your laptop. I acutally like the last one  or an expansion card with a little hand crank to chage your laptop. might be getting less realistic now.
  3. for something gaming-like i’d guess new version dgpu. though I don’t understand that bowl of something. some kind of flips?Pasta?Worms? Maybe additionally a housing for old dgpus to make them egpus for other laptops.

This is fun, like playing bingo.
Framework should hand out a little trophy if someone got all three correct

I hope one of the surprises is a 2nd gen FW16 board with a newer AMD chip and without any liquid metal involved in any shape or form!

my guesses:

  • New 2-in-1 chassis for the FW13
  • New standard chassis for the FW13
  • New battery upgrade on the FW13
  • FW16 specs refresh
  • Dual USB-C expansion cards?

I can’t really see any new product category being viable for them - except perhaps a smartwatch (Pebble-style) or a Steam Deck-handheld.

I want to play.

1.) I really want the first one to be a miniled or OLED screen but I agree with people it is probably new chasis colors as there is no comma between that and yoga and they were probably troubleshooting with the multi color expansion cards

2.) the yoga I don’t see how that is anything other than a new chasis with 360 degree hinge. I’m thinking it won’t be a hinge that can be used on current 13 models as I think that would get less fan far though I will be happy to be wrong. I’m sure internally we would be able to put the entire 13 into the new chasis otherwise that would make 0 sense from framework

3.) I want this to be a housing for old batteries since I have one but think a 240 usb charger more likely as they straight up just need to offer that to really make any headway for the 16 as a gaming laptop. Maybe they’ll do both that would be great

4.) I think just a more bad ass dGPU. I think they would be crazy to do a handheld. I don’t think they are a big enough company. I would love it to be strix halo for 16 (maybe 13 at lower power? also) but online wisdom is not possible without solder or icam and I see no hints here that would be icam and solder is not why any of us bought framework (though honestly I wouldn’t care. I really want strix halo and personally I do not upgrade RAM. Solder obviously not repairable though so I remain skeptical they would make that compromise).

That’s my two cents

I think that the lightning bolt symbol either means a new thunderbolt version, or what I think is more likely is devices with an increased power limit. We already have 240W charging available (and it’s far from perfect, see here: A call on 240w adapter - #162 by Obasav)

But! I think with the fixes to the EC and other various components that control the power, there’s a bit of room to stretch its legs. Maybe HX series? Maybe they’ll put Strix Halo? I’m curious what they do though. If I recall correctly, both of those have fewer PCIe lanes, but I could be mistaken.

Not a guess, but what I would like to see:

FW13 with AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX370. Would allow for gaming on the 13 model

Maybe a black chassis.

:zap:= Framework is the first vendor to offer upgradable LPCAMM2 modules.

Yeah I am not getting my hopes up there but it would be neat. Afaik there are no fitting oleds on the market and them making a custom one sounds somewhat far fetched.

The reselling forum is about to explode for sure!
Those of you who like cheap second hand hardware are going to have a field day.

Hear me out…

I hope it’s not a new product category.

I just need a solid, dependable, repairable laptop. So, with that, is it a new 14 inch laptop with thicker chassis and built-in dGPU? (I’m hoping it’s not a printer, not a portable gaming handheld)

Still waiting for Framework to become my go-to. Currently, it’s not.

I’m not sure what all those colourful Runes indicate…

I definitely want ECC RAM and OLED display. Pretty Please!

Excited for some big announcements! How about…

  1. New tablet/convertable laptop
  2. Thunderbolt 5 dock
  3. Modular gaming handheld
  4. Refreshes of Framework 13/16 with the latest Intel/AMD chips

Some very good guesses here that I wouldn’t have thought of.

A foldable tablet (aka: UMPC) would speak to my heart.

Really looking forward to the big reveal!

My hopes are mostly for a 2nd gen FW16 with bendgate, paint chipping and other technical issues resolved.
And also the Ryzen MAX chips so I can buy non MAX cheaper

@Destroya - Without giving us any details, and to further tease us, can you give a yes or no if any of these guesses are accurate? Then we can all speculate which.

They have a thread already on why this is super unlikely. There are so many patents encumbering everything to do with printers.

Whatever the 2nd gen is, please do not eliminate compatibility with the FW13 form factor if there’s a new laptop line.

The whole point of framework is that we wouldn’t have to scrap the entire laptop to upgrade down the line.

Framework 16 is first gen, obviously second gen would be the framework 32. Twice the size, twice the power, twice the modules. Still no touch screen.

Nah it’s likely opening up the market aspect to re-sales, community projects, and other third party stuff. That’s my legit guess
