I think the term “2nd Gen” in the event title “Framework (2nd Gen) Event” is an event counter. This event is Framework’s 2nd in-person announcement event. The 1st event was this one.
But yeah, I believe they care about their product’s backward compatibilities. Their past activities prove that.
The logo on the back of the robot’s laptop is reminiscent of (but distinct from) the Canonical logo - possible certification?
Gaming news might mean getting certified as SteamOS compatible, new hardware, or both.
I think there’s some steganography in the “25th” image, some kind of rebus? The background is bright in places independent of the text. Tracing and some filling in gave me this from the “2” square:
I’m really hoping for a different chassis for the Framework 13. I don’t care if it’s a little thicker, I’d like more battery life. Also, replacing the battery on the FW16 seems much easier with the new design so far as the guides go, so I hope this is ported over to the FW13 in a new mainboard, there could be some compatibility issues but those would be easily midigated with an adapter and a bracket to hold the adapter down, perhaps.
Oh, and bringing the speakers from the FW16 to the FW13 would be great too, side pointing speakers are easier to hear while using the laptop as a lap top.
Those are my latest thoughts with the information give thus far. If I can, I plan to listen to the live stream, I’m looking forward to it!
I hope new cooler translates to 2nd gen FW16 board without the Liquid Metal gimic. Perhaps a newer AMD Ryzen for the 2nd gen board? Just hoping but i guess we’ll find out soon!
I would most likely buy a tablet device, but I doubt that is what is coming. For one, an entirely new product category, still (relatively) soon after the release of the 16, seems like a lot, and secondly, other than iPads, the tablet market is kind of a wasteland, so it seems that it would be a bit of a questionable decision.
The thing that I would personally most want (but is even more unlikely), is a phone, for the same reasons listed above (no truly repairable, open OS phone available in the US).
I think that a new GPU for the 16, maybe a new form factor for the 13, are some of the more likely options
I cannot overstate how simultaneously frustrating and entertaining this comment is to me. There are so many theories in this thread already - now, we know that some are very close and that some that are polar opposites (itself, a hint as to what they could be!).
I doubt that. The current cooling capacity of Framework 13 chassis is about 35W, which is the lowest cTDP of HX 370. I don’t think Framework to put a processor that’s meant to run at 45W to 54W into Framework 13.
The price point would matter a lot – I’m a very light user of my phone, so I’m not dropping $1k for one – but I’m heading into the market for a new phone soon (after five years with my current budget Android device), so I’d be interested in this. For me, it would have to compete with the Pixel 8a. However…
Yeah. My wife and I each have an 11th Gen Framework 13, and we’ve never been happier with a laptop, so my top concern – by far – is that Framework sticks to the original vision of providing software support and parts for this thing, and a path to upgrade it when I decide to pull that trigger. I really like the idea of “do one thing and do it well,” but I’m not a businessman, so maybe that’s not viable and Framework needs to grow to stay alive… just don’t abandon the previously sold products in doing so.
Well, this is indeed the path that virtually every other company has chosen, but this is also supposed to be what sets Framework apart. If Framework did the same thing, it would give me little reason to choose Framework over, say, HP or Dell for my next laptop.
Branding seem more evident in this image than the last event image. And the T5 seems to be a part of the intrigue. I think a an upgrade that can be implemented by end users is a given. Maybe a framework branded OS? I’m afraid to hope for OLED for the FW16…
I would really like to see a second gen FW16 that solves the build quality and form factor issues of the current one. The FW16 is really big from what I’ve seen, big enough that it won’t fit into a 30L peak design backpack! I’ve been eyeing FW so that i can finally upgrade my laptop but given the price of entry the FW16 just isn’t there at the moment. I would also like to see it incorporate Strix Halo – i don’t need discrete graphics but I could definitely use more compute and having the ability to game occasionally while traveling would sure be nice. A Strix Halo caliber APU just makes more sense than adding a bulky GPU to the end of the laptop imo.
Alternatively, if they release a “perfect” iteration of the AMD FW13, I’d be happy with that (although I hate how it only has 4 ports). I do want another M.2 port for it though.
The perfect size for me would probably be 14 or 15"… but i guess that’s not going to happen.
Finally, would love to see FW move to an open source bios like so many have been requesting.
As for other products… really wish there was a Fairphone alternative for the US… and repairable ANC headphones…
The more I think about this…the more it seems like it’s going to be a gaming handheld. That’s a relatively young consumer market with no need to cater for corporate use cases. No hinge, no keyboard, no trackpad, swap in gaming controls. Something relatively easy to pivot to / cater for with the existing staff expertise.
