I would really like a more robust case for the current 13" systems. I’d transplant mine and buy some upgraded parts so quick.
Or, a translucent purple and orange case for the framework 13" in a 12.5" form factor closer to the iBook G3 and G4. A boy can dream.
I’m just so excited, I do see the fan and PCIe card and do hope for a fanless, or noctua cooler option and updated wifi cards.
New FW16 dGPU. New FW16 dGPU. New FW16 dGPU.
I’m just here for the wild speculation.
Keep it up, fellow nerds!
This would actually be awesome, considering Valve is looking to get people installing steamos on more devices. This would be a match made in heaven.
I cannot see nvidia on framework 16 considering their abysmal Linux support in recent years, but maybe Framework will only market it to Windows users if they made one.
I’m personally hoping for a proper 240w charger for the FW16 and a reversible 13 chassis with touchscreen.
I can’t see OLED being offered as those are not very long-lasting technologies. But I guess the screens are replaceable and we can just replace the OLED screen every 2 years when burn-in/yellowing starts to really show. Kind of goes against the sustainable goal though.
How about an eGPU that can be used with both FW13 and 16?
They’re trying to take my job! >:(
Latest-gen OLED panels last wayyyy more than 2 years, fortunately. But I still agree that the technology needs to mature a bit more.
I guess it would be interesting if no one guesses what they are coming out with as it might imply they have not chosen the most marketable item.
Given they have a 13 and 16 inch laptop, the next step is most likely:
- games platform. Maybe steamos based.
- Tablet, 2in1 convertable
- mobile phone.
I think the mobile phone market is already crammed with options, so probably too risky for FW, but 1 and 2 seem possibilities to me.
Now I imagine all the frame.work employees/founders sitting there with drinks and popcorn, enjoying everyone frantically trying to guess what was meant
My guess for the third product is a monitor/TV. Something worthy of LAN parties, gaming and watching movies…although I don’t know why it would be Cheetos rather than popcorn?
A high refresh rate, portable(?), repairable, upgradable, OLED monitor anyone?
I really hope this is not true…because I would have to buy all three of those.
Phone, while saturated, there really is no truly repairable phone:
-Fairphone is not available in the USA and it is a terribly unstable device
-Google pixel, the user can install their own OS, but the phone is not repairable
-HMD you can repair the phone, but the OS is completely locked with a 2year life
-everything else is disposable trash
So, if done right, Framework could make a great phone.
may as well throw out what openAI thinks…
Best Guess:
Framework is announcing a 2nd-generation Framework Laptop with major improvements, potentially including:
- A gaming-focused variant (likely with a dedicated GPU or external GPU support).
- Better cooling solutions for improved performance.
- More powerful CPU options (perhaps AMD Ryzen 8000 series or Intel 14th gen).
- Potential ARM-based or power-efficient variant (unlikely but possible).
I think whatever they do, going forward will mean a change in how they handle memory. The memory speeds the newer chips are designed for require either soldered memory, which would be an unfortunate step down in modularity they likely want to avoid, or the use of CAMM modules which are still relatively rare and hard to source for individuals, but keep most of the modularity of SODIMM
I just hope that if a 2 in 1 were to be revealed, it would have support for boards from the laptop 13
My prediction is a new top and bottom case for the framework 13, giving it a 360 hinge and touchscreen. Additionally, I think we’ll either see a gaming handheld, or, simply a controller to go with the computers. A nice repairable controller would be pretty sweet, especially with a flush fitting 2.4ghz expansion card dongle. (or even better, an integrated radio on newer motherboards.)
Mostly agree, though there is also another perspektive possible,
Paying for fast and good software support is mainly a problem for small companies; if you sell a couple million of one device, that money for software support is nothing. So everything that brings brings good publicity and increases overall laptop sales should help, even new markets.
Counterpoint. If a company can reach that scale while not having to invest on software support, why would they invest the financial resources into it? It doesn’t generate direct revenue after all…
